Even if you had a telesnap, you wouldn't know whereabouts in the clip it came from. If the stock footage had sound, which made it into the final programme, then I'd imagine you would be able to sync it up and have a fairly accurate punt! Even if it wasn't original audio, the length of the added audio could help too.

Any added audio would be the same duration as the video clip. But if the whole footage is 10 minutes long and they used 30 seconds, and they replaced the sound, how do you know which 30 seconds they used..?

Wouldn't you only be interested in the 30 seconds they used? As I said, you would only be able to track it down if you had some reference (like a tele-snap) and an audio cue for the duration of the shot (like a volcano erupting).
