Thanks for sharing, John. I often wonder how many more miscataloged gems there are in the archives waiting to be found. There have been some brilliant Doctor Who and Adam Adamant Lives! finds this way, even smaller finds like the trailer for The Power of the Daleks.
On the reverse side, I wonder if it's possible that material is believed to exist, but actually doesn't due to miscataloging?

Where archives have been digitised I'd suspect the possibility of errors is small.

The BFI thought they had 5 tapes of "The Accursed Kings" (import from France) but on closer inspection it turned out they only had the 1st episode. The series still exists in France, but the English voice-over and subtitles are gone (to the dismay of many English viewers, apparently).

Oh no - I'd been dreaming for years of somehow seeing Les Rois Maudits again. It was a really good drama (Catherine Rouvel was a bonus). I don't think my French will be up to following it without subtitles.....

If the original exists things like subtitles, dubbing, commentary, etc can be recreated.

On the reverse side, I wonder if it's possible that material is believed to exist, but actually doesn't due to miscataloging? The BBC thought they had a negative print of all seven episodes of the first Dalek story...until the positive print of episode 7 was damaged, and they opened the tin to strike a new one, only to find that it was a misfiled magnetic soundtrack. (afaik the other six eps do have negative prints)

Didn't Monty Python have to redub one of the German specials because the BBC had wiped their master tape?

If the original exists things like subtitles, dubbing, commentary, etc can be recreated. In theory, yes, but English viewers won't be able to watch it, at least not at the moment, because there is only the French DVD, which has no subtitles. A pity because it is a great series, a kind of medieval I, Claudius of dynastic trouble brewing. Luckily, fan subs for episode 1 are being made. Anyway, it was just an example of archived items still going astray. Didn't Monty Python have to redub one of the German specials because the BBC had wiped their master tape? Could you mean the much shorter May Day special? The second German Episode was recorded in English but this never appeared redubbed to me. (Incidentally the German version of the latter was very much different, with a few extra sketches and the others a bit shorter and in a different order.)
