The only time would be if a scheduling conflict occurred or if the time taken to send a film print from say New Zealand to Nigeria would take longer than sending a fresh print from the BBC straight to Nigeria. I've worked out that the minimum number of copies of Marco Polo needed to provide for all 21 countries pre-1967 is only eight. These were all Suppressed Field T/Rs. (And this is dependent on the bold assumption they were only ever bicycled within the same region (e.g. Africa,Caribbean, Asia)) Only Sierra Leone and Ethiopia are likely to have got (the same?) Stored Field T/Rs that were introduced into the system after 1967. (If indeed Marco did ever have Stored Fields made.) In all likelihood, the BBC destroyed all the Suppressed Field ones as and when they were returned, as they only wanted to keep Stored Fields. With all this in mind (all Suppressed destroyed, and only one (?) Stored set in circulation and no negatives) it's hardly surprising there are no copies of this serial in existence. I would have said 8 MAXIMUM.

I would have said 8 MAXIMUM. There could have been more than eight; but that total is the bare minimum needed for to allow for movement just within each region. That means each print was shared by no more than three countries, which seems right.

Africa North America (incl Caribbean) Mediterranean Europe (incl Aden) Australasia/Asia Hi Jon, Didn't you suggest over on GB that after Season 1 (roughly), the Australian prints weren't bicycled on? Presumably that would imply another set of unique prints in addition to the NZ/Singapore set? (Not to mention any dupes made in Australia - looking forward to seeing the fruits of your research on this!)

I can see how difficult it is contact ex-BBC staff and technicians from the '60s and ask them if they know anything about the fate of missing episodes,as all those people from that era are now succumbing to ill-health,becoming house-bound and losing contact with other colleagues from the industry.I work in a pharmacy and a few of my patients are retired BBC technicians, one of which was even in charge of the fire department at the BBC archives ( although I'm not sure whether it was at Villiers House or tv centre ).I even knew the gentleman who manufactured the monster costumes for the Troughton era-he bought me in a swatch of the actual silver material they used for the cybermen.God,did he slag off Bobbi Bartlett! As time goes on it will get harder and harder to make enquires.I have asked these people if they know of any leads but it's drawn a blank so far. However,I have loads of ex-tv personel coming in,so for what it's worth I'll keep asking...you never know!

(Not to mention any dupes made in Australia - looking forward to seeing the fruits of your research on this!) The ABC tended to use and keep their own copies. The only known time that the ABC sent prints on was a small batch that went to NZ in 1967. For the rest of Asia, there may have been shared prints between Hong Kong, Singapore, Thailand and NZ. But it's known that 'out of region' bicycling did take place: for instance Cyprus sent prints to Hong Kong, and NZ sent prints to Nigeria.
