Hi, long time viewer, really first time poster with anything that may matter.
My question is that why some of the 60's episodes of Who appeared in 35mm when most of the world at that time seemed to be taking 16mm film. What countries were taking 35mm?
Apologies if this is a done topic (or if it's been covered by Wiped)
Go easy on me I'm new at this thing

What countries were taking 35mm? The United Kingdom. Broadcaster was BBC1. The 2" video tapes were telecined to 35 mm film for editing, and then originally transmitted from 35 mm film. BBC couldn't broadcast directly from 16 mm film ... quality too low ... it's not the colonies after all.

There were a few case throughout the 1960s where VT recording machines apparently weren't available for the main recording sessions, so instead, the studio output was sent directly to a 35mm telerecording machine and the whole of that evening's studio work was recorded onto 35mm, which was the accepted BBC film format used for transmission. This was then edited and became the transmission master for that episode.
Material recorded directly onto film immediately became under the control of the Film Library rather than the Engineering Department (as per the videotapes) and the FL had a good record of keeping hold of material, so the majority of the 35mm master prints were retained.
Enterprises would have made the usual 16mm copies of the episodes, but as these would have always been inferior quality to the 35mm version, there wouldn't have been any perceived need to have held onto any 16mm telerecordings of those particular episodes.

I think what Denny is sayings is that Dr.Who was not transmitted from 16mm telerecordings in the UK? The UK could not send VTRs to other countries (at the time) because around 1952 the BBC decided to lumber the UK with the old 405 line system, while incredibly??? promoting and helping set up a 625 line system for Europe. Certainly many imported programmes from Australasia and the US (that were originally made on 35mm) were transmitted in the UK on 16mm. Some feature films were too that were originally widescreen, were squashed to 16mm to save the dreaded live 'pan and scanning'.

Thanks for the information! Although a bit confusing, it seems that primarily UK based broadcast quality telerecordings were done in 35mm, while export quality telerecordings were done in 16mm. So the last handful of 35mm episodes we have are the rarest of the rare
