Hmm an interesting one this. Although I wouldn't have worded this point quite so passionately it does seem to me at times true that various people posting messages on here are met with very negative responses indeed. It may well be true that the people making these replies aren't intending their messages to sound quite so snotty or clever-clever as they do but all the same I do feel as though there seems to be a minority of members who seem almost to delight in springing upon various posts and then ripping them to shreds. Now I'm not arguing that the points being made in response aren't correct in what they're stating; indeed for my part I have to admit that most of them are. But rather its the way they're made. At the end of the day correcting a poster, whether they be old or new, on any point can surely be done without malice or conceit for all being said and done aren't we all brothers and sisters bonded by a common theme?

I think it's a fair and reasonable request. There are two sides to it though. Dr Who, in particular, is high profile - it's the only programme with its own MB here and there is an unfortunate, and well documented, history of hoaxes. I can't immediately think of hoaxes relating to other programmes. Consequently, when somebody new arrives with a possible lead the immediate reaction can often be suspicion. However, I would agree that perhaps the hostility could sometimes been toned down - questions don't need to be accompanied by thumbscrews and the rack !

The way this site treats newbies is, frankly, disgusting (especially in the Dr.Who section) with frequent sarcasm and thinly-vieled insults to most new posters who dare to encroach on their little club. Have been visting this site for many years, but will no longer. Perhaps you should have put your complaint in the Dr .Who section? As there is no 'little club' going on here, the majority of us just come and go with requests or additions, even the board founder Mark Brown rarely posts these days. The moderation is very good and if there were insults or transgressions, then they are gone before we would see them. I cant see anybody trying to be clever, although sometimes our memories let us down and sometimes there are lively arguments and a bit of mischief going on,but this makes it a living, breathing board I would have thought? With sarcasm, sometimes its easy to see something that is not there depending on how your thinking at the time. But if you can point out some pacific examples, I am sure the mods will give you a good hearing about it? It looks like you have only posted this thread, so In the meantime why dont you try and request info or add something and see what the response is. PS, you have to understand that the Dr,Who people are desperate guys and and gals who are frantically trying recover as much Who material as they can before it turns to dust. Its no fun for them being wound up and sent on wild goose chases,so this is why they may be perceived as giving someone a cold welcome? .

I do not believe in being unpleasant to new posters on principle as most of us were new to the scene at some point. However when someone with a post count of two posts on either a doctor who forum or the doctor who section here with a post about their uncle having a load of missing Troughtons it does set certain alarm bells off.
If people such as Darren Gregory and friends choose to waste their time and hinder serious researchers, that is their prerogative, such as it is.
If they manage to brown someone off who is doing actual research into missing who and other missing telly it is surely counterproductive. We share our toys at this forum so far as I am aware and history demonstrates this; many members here have returned or shared missing material that they have found. It would be sad to think that someone stopped researching and returning missing material due to pointless wind ups.
I am never mean to new posters; posts about 35mm home video recordings of Hartnell, whilst rarely amusing do not really merit a large ammount of respect. Who attracts a fair ammount of people who appear to have mental health problems who want to post fantasist claims on the internet; a fact of life.
We'd all like to see Marco polo and the web of fear, hoaxing doesn't really help them get returned and hence sometimes new posters with a very similar style to known hoaxers get less than warm welcomes.

Yes, most of the disrespect I've seen on the site has been on the Dr Who Board. May I recommend the final episode of Bleasdale's GBH, which has side-splitting sub-plot about a Dr Who convention?
Don't let it get you down, OP - it's really not important.

Fortunately the rude or sarcastic replies to newcomers are few and far between (and this site is far more friendly than many) but they do happen. As I always say, keep it civil as per forum rules, folks!

I agree that its a fine line between a rumor and a reality. Sometimes truth is between the two For example, Terry happened to say that he had a couple dr who episodes in his film collection. The piles someone said they saw in Sierra Leone, appear to have been true. While I understand that those who are doing serious research may not desire to bother with these "i got something here " stories, i think it would it would be worthwhie to have someone(s) assigned to handle these stories so that they can be verified/denied. While there were hoaxes, sometimes i wonder what we may have missed because we assumed something to be a hoax?
But I agree wholeheartedly, that unless someone is a hokester, people should be given respect.

As an 'oldie' - although I have been with the Forum only four years I think, a newbie compared to some - I have to say that almost every Forum I've ever seen is more impolite than this! As an oldie-I write this on my 43rd birthday!
