Some time ago there was mention of potentially missing Dr Who episodes in Zimbabwe and that due to relations between the UK and Zimbabwe, there was no way of verifying this. Having read Richard Molesworth's Missing Episodes Book, there appears to be no substantiation of this. Is this just a media joke, or is there more substance to it.

I remember this story in The Sun. I doubt it's true though however there could be some truth in it.

That was the ridiculous idea that got touted in the press that Robert Mugabe might have missing episodes tucked away somewhere - which all came about because someone made some witty comment on Gallifrey Base, which was then taken up by someone on there who regularly sells Doctor Who "stories" to the press, regardless of whether they are fact or fiction.

It often seems that a few news stories about lost episodes in the past have come from forums of fan websites. It's strange as there seems to be more stories in papers that aren't true than I did for when episodes were recovered last year. In fact in several papers they never mentioned the recovery.

That's the nature of the press, I'm afraid. Basically, it's the difference between:
"Two average episodes of Dr Who found at jumble sale"
and
"Evil Tyrant Mugabe hoarding Classic Doctor Who Treasure"
...and you can see which is going to attract attention.

Of the last remaining 106 episodes how many were even shown in Zimbabwe?

Of the last remaining 106 episodes how many were even shown in Zimbabwe? I would forget about Africa in terms of getting lost Doctor Who episodes back from TV stations. Paul Vanezis said the search of that continent is basically finished. Your only hope would be a film collector in Africa, but I never recall any film collector in Africa ever having or returning material in the past.

Well I think we still have a tough but not impossible task against finding any other eps.... The Sun had a big "story" on missing Dr Who - no more turned up. The recovery of UM2 and GF3 was all over the media - no more turned up. They were both from a collector who'd had them since Pontius was a Pilot and didn't know that Auntie had dumped the originals. There have been a number of good suggestions made on the MBs here about how to get the message to hard-to-reach groups and possible places to look. These have all got to be followed up but we're looking for needles and sometimes we haven't even found the haystack.

John, A lot in what you say,but the two latest finds were in the keeping of someone who had worked in TV,is mates with the man charged with heritage at the BBC,the latter being described as a fan of the series. A less hard-to-reach pair I could hardly imagine, unless it's the editor of Doctor Who Monthly.I think there are many, many more haystacks out there.

I was hoping that the Massacre could be there but the chances are zero. Maybe a copy of Marco Polo could turn up but nobody is going into Mugabe's land at this time.
