I was looking up a movie on IMDB yesterday, only to discover a message saying "This is believed to be a 'lost' movie.Search your attics." Has any systematic attempt been made to make similar requests about 'missing' TV shows on the site?(I'm thinking of the less obvious ones as well as Who and Hancock).

Would be interesting.
However the information on lost films isn't always accurate or updated so someone would need to update IMDb as material was found.

It's not an official message, it's basically a plot outline or review that a contributor has posted. I suppose the IMDb COULD launch a campaign to locate missing footage, but the masses have largely abandoned it in favour of youtube.

Yes,the message I read was logged under 'trivia',I believe. There seem to be certain shows where people check on IMDB through nostalgia or because they appeared. These include the children's shows that were junked in the 80s,and Opportunity Knocks. These also seem some of the most likely things for other people to have retained.(let's face it,most of us haven't got missing movies or 50s TV shows in the loft, but might have an episode of the Saturday Banana). No reason it can't be done on Youtube, too. In many cases, there are hundreds or thousands of viewings of old kids shows. While they sometimes get quite a few 'I remember this one!' responses,a sensible posting asking if anyone else has similar-and how important it is-could get results. Remember, many people out there are either too nervous, too unsophisticated,or too lazy,to actually upload anything.
