On my mobile at the moment but can dig them up later for you, John.
If there's anything 'On the ground' that my relative might be able to help with feel free to ask and I'll check with her. Obviously she has neither the knowledge or the credentials to contact the archives directly (thats a job for professionals and NOT something who fans should be doing) but other paper cuttings might be of use!

I was reading a story about the Doctor Who episodes sent to Sierra Leone in this article: www.kasterborous.com/2011/12/the-missing-episodes-of-sierra-leone/and I stumbled upon this interesting comment by user "andyhick" "Rubbish! The televsion vaults at Sierra Leone are far from destroyed! I known of two people who are employeed as researchers there and I was in touch with them only two years ago. I did ask then about the rumours about the civil war reducing the building to rubble but they denied this saying that only the entrance suffered damage during a mortar attack. The complete destruction reported widely stems from propaganda stories initiated by the oppostion forces (they also reported the apparent destruction of other landmarks). I will definately ask them next time I contact them to enquire exactly whats in the archives. Its probably more a case of what has been saved to this day than whats been blown to smithereens." Has anyone confirmed if this is true? Sounds strange. Something smells bad. He said he hasn't spoken to them for two years. The importance of that archive only came to light in the last year. Why would he care about the archive two years ago when nobody else in the world seemed to give a damn? If he really was trying to help, why wouldn't he pass on the information to the BBC about how to contact the researchers? Sounds and smells like a setup.

Well I suppose it's worth someone asking Paul again about what's the actual facts are regarding that destruction, after all that article just says that person asked about the destruction of the archives, not necessarily in relation to a doctor who point of view, even though it was in an answer to a Doctor Who posting. But then when I previously ventured a question about the Ethiopian archives on this forum, I was rather bemused by the comment Paul put in reply. But then with the 50th Anniversary year just about to begin, I think I would be wary of anyone's answers.......

I certainly wouldn't be hopping onto a plane to a worn torn country based on a single comment posted on the internet. Nonetheless, it shouldn't be completely discredited until we've at least gotten in touch with the fellow who posted it. I also don't know if it is fair to say that the archive in Sierra Leone has only been of importance for the last year. It seems people have been discussing this since at least 2007: lostdrwho.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=africa&action=post&thread=31"e=471

The links he posted for his name lead to Page Not Found.

When the relative visits S.Leone she should be given the address of the tv station to see for herself. If it's still there then a telephone contact would be useful.

If the archive was blown up in 1999 then it's likely that the've rebuilt it since then. So if anyone was to actually go they would proably just find a new building built upon the ruins of the old one and the film prints that went with it.

Although this doesn't explain the comment that only the entrance was damaged. Personally, I'd take this with a massive handful of sodium chloride...

I wasn't really taking that into consideration since the comment made by "Andyhick" is likely a hoax. What I meant was that thirteen years is more than enough time for them to have paved over the area and rebuild on it, so it is more than likely that there is absolutely nothing there to be seen/found now. Still, maybe it could be worth sending someone to check it out just to put this to bed

I still think we might get something from Google Earth - they have historic images as well.

Get what, though..? A pile of bricks strewn over a load of charred film cans..? Seriously, what's the point..?

Get what, though..? A pile of bricks strewn over a load of charred film cans..? Seriously, what's the point..? It would be good to get something absolutely definitive so that we either don't waste any more time on a wild goose chase or we have a whip round for an air ticket.

If anyone from the team thinks my relative might be of some (albeit limited) help, I'll leave it to them to pop me a PM. She arrives on the first of Feb.
