I more amazed that they were not contacted/searched for before the war happened since the hunt had begun in the early 80's.
I also thought they had Marco Polo, Reign of Terror and the Crusades, if they had all these and those listed above we'd have pretty much a near complete archive of Hartnell stories.

The BBC asked if they had any and they said no (unless I'm getting confused with another country). Because it's a foreign station they can't just say "we don't believe you, we'll send people anyway". Many TV stations had shocking records kept of what was in an archive/film store. Not surprising that there was stuff stored away no one knew about (such as the Tomb discovery in 1991 when Hong Kong said the only ep they had was Web 1 over a decade earlier).

According to BroaDWcast, the missing stories; Galaxy 4 The Myth Makers The Massacre The Celestial Toymaker The Savages still existed in the film archive before it was destroyed sometime between 1991 and 2002. The existing stories, The Ark and The Gunfighters were held there too. So how was it confirmed that they HAD the episodes? Existing inventory records?

So how was it confirmed that they HAD the episodes? Existing inventory records? Yes, there was paperwork. AIUI, something will be published in due course to explain it all.

Do you mean shocking or shoddy in terms of their record keeping? From what this sounds like, it seems that the people in Sierra Leone dropped the ball. When it comes to missing Doctor Who, we seem to be cursed with unfortunate circumstances at the BBC and overseas stations, very bad luck at the most inopportune times, and hoaxers.

You might find the 2nd commentary track on Tomb of the Cybermen Special Edition(Revisitations 3 Box Set), intriguing and perhaps reassuring

Im just speculating, however im starting to wonder if they contacted the wrong person. If they had contacted other people or kept asking for referrals, if they would have found them..
I wonder if they are still under the ground risking deterioration at the moment? What if they were there and we never checked?
One way to know for sure is to check it out.

By the way it is being described by Mr. Phipps, it sounds that either the employees in Sierra Leone were extremely incompetent in terms of keeping proper records for over a hundred film prints, or there is the possibility that somebody was being lazy by saying "no, we don't have anything" so they wouldn't have to do any work to find the episodes.

But with only five missing episodes from those two seasons being returned by film collectors over the years, good luck does not seem to be in our corner.

I was reading a story about the Doctor Who episodes sent to Sierra Leone in this article: www.kasterborous.com/2011/12/the-missing-episodes-of-sierra-leone/and I stumbled upon this interesting comment by user "andyhick" "Rubbish! The televsion vaults at Sierra Leone are far from destroyed! I known of two people who are employeed as researchers there and I was in touch with them only two years ago. I did ask then about the rumours about the civil war reducing the building to rubble but they denied this saying that only the entrance suffered damage during a mortar attack. The complete destruction reported widely stems from propaganda stories initiated by the oppostion forces (they also reported the apparent destruction of other landmarks). I will definately ask them next time I contact them to enquire exactly what’s in the archives. It’s probably more a case of what has been saved to this day than what’s been blown to smithereens." Has anyone confirmed if this is true?

I have a close relative spending time in Sierra Leone in the coming weeks. I'll leave the episode hunting to the experts but perhaps if any publically available library documents were wanting photocopying (were tv listings ever published) or photos of the archive building being taken I'm sure she'd be able to help out.

If my friend ever goes back there I'll ask her too! It's maybe a shame I didn't think of it the first time, but it's a bit of a big favout to ask of someone who's going there to work not have fun.

With the wonders of Google Earth it may be possible to check from our armchairs - does anybody have the precise coordinates of the archive/film store ?
