Hi there,
I know this probably won't happen but do you think there is any chance that the bbc might colourise An Unearthly Child Ep 1 for the 50th anniversary. I know it would cost alot of money but does anyone think there is a chance of it happening.
Thanks

Rather than colourise a show that was made in black and white, it would make more sense to re-film the early stories. They still have the original camera scripts so these early adventures could be remade in full HD, colour and with a stereo soundtrack. That way they would also appeal to the young kids who are watching the current series.
Why waste money colourizing a show that was never meant to be seen in colour?

I think it would be good if the scripts were re-used and adjusted slightly and perhaps re made for the new series based on the original scripts but altered slightly to fit in with the new cast and doctor and perhaps do this with one missing story per year so there is some representation of the adventure within the run, General viewers will not remember or care that the stories have been done before. Not the same as having the originals but fun all the same.

Equally, why waste money remaking an episode that already exists..?

If the whole lot (60's Dr Who) still existed, would it have been coloured by now? In a similar fashion to popular American series that started in B/W and made the transition to colour. It would be nice to have, but I would have four copies of it lol!! was lucky enough to find the original VHS in a video hire store sale a cpl of years ago, got it for two bucks!!!

Why the heck would you ever want to colorize something that was made in B&W??? I for one want to see things the way they were made - B&W has different lighting and effects that the directors most likely took advantage of -- watching colorized versions ruins all that. I'd much rather see them spend their money animating episodes that no longer exist.

As StevenS said. Why on earth colourise something that was intended to be seen in black and white. Just my own feeling but I wouldnt want to see this, unless it was some kind of fan effort. I rather like black and white, its atmospheric. Im not too enthusiastic about the animations either though StevenS. I would much rather see some recreations made featuring live action using the original script and soundtrack and replica props. It may well work out cheaper than making animations as well!

I'd be interested to see one story colourised, just as a curiosity, but I wouldn't want to see it done until every single missing episode had been animated and every b/w Pertwee recoloured first.

The examples I spoke of look washed out and when a mouth opens sometimes the inside is black and white! Lol. I personally enjoy watching old B/W movies etc. Just something about it I can't put my finger on but it's a good thing. ;D

actully greg h some black and white films were made for budget reasons like the film SHE(1935).mervin.c.cooper wanted to shoot the film in technicolour but R.K.O pulled the budget and mervin had to shoot it in black and white.today a colourized version was made by ray harryhausen(who also colourized his three movies earth vs the saucers,it came from beneath the sea and 20 million miles to earth' because he had the same problem as mervin)and legend films(who did planet of the daleks part 3)as a tribute to mervin.

on twitter babelcolour is still doing MOE but he said he sent a "secret project' to the BBC to be graded.it might be a 60's doctor who.i don't know what episode it is but i think it's ether the war games episode 10 or an unearthly child episode 1.

I doubt it; it's probably a Pertwee episode if anything, seeing as he mentioned that 'not a lot of people would know it was colourised', ie colour correcting Ambassadors of Death or something

My thoughts is that lighting is done differently for colour than b/w shows. When shows are colourized, they normally dont look as good to me. Of course there could be exceptions.
