I was reading about Porridge the other day and discovered that Fletcher et al actually first appeared in a comic anthology series a while before the series proper. I'm just wondering if this proto-porridge episode exists and also if the This Is Your Life for Richard Beckinsale (77) is safely in the archives?

The pilot of "Porridge" was called "Prisoner and Escort", and was first shown on 1/4/73 in a series of one-offs called "Seven of One", all starring Ronnie Barker. It does still exist, and has been repeated on British tv many times (usually as part of repeat series of "Porridge") - the last time being 3rd of May this year. The only other one of the "Seven of One" to be developed as a series was "Open All Hours", shown 25/3/73, though the series didn't follow until 1976.
I don't know about Richard Beckinsale's "This is Your Life", but I wouldn't be surprised if it did exist.

I don't know about Richard Beckinsale's "This is Your Life", but I wouldn't be surprised if it did exist. The Beckinsale edition 23-11-77 does survive. All the TIYL episodes from late 1975 onwards exist.
