One of my favourite musicians from the 1970's (and 80's with Wax/Graham Gouldman). His albums have been regular companions on my car cd player during long drives home through the night. I'm not sure if he actually appeared on TOTP in person but I'm sure the promo for 'Never Let Her Slip Away' was shown and Legs and Co put together a decent display for 'Lonely Boy': www.youtube.com/watch?v=GTP5fBPwPoIThe BBC also broadcast a 'support' slot that was filmed when Gold was in Linda Ronstadt's touring band. Probably in 1977. As I recall he was the 'opening act'. That's a programme I remember recording on my Dad's Phillips and I wonder if that has survived in the BBC archive ..? His wikipedia entry gives an accurate reflection of his many achievements. He was a gifted musician and I'm really sorry that he's gone - way too soon.

Really sad , i thought " Never let her slip away" was a great single one of my favourite records at that time , and i also bought the album "All This and Heaven Too" , they seem to be dropping like flies at the moment.

I believe his mum was Marni Nixon who ghosted the movie singing for Audrey Hepburn and Deborah Kerr.
Have to say I didn't like "Never let her slip away" but "Lonely boy" was one of THE songs of the 70s for me : I still regularly play it now along with the fabulous B-side "Angel woman".

How could ANYONE not like 'Never let her slip away'..?? It's a STUNNING piece of perfect pop writing. Amazing that the song is virtually unknown in the States? A very sad loss and at today's rate to die at 59 is virtually bordering on insane. :-(

Of course, the appreciation of music will always be subjective. Dale is entitled to his own opinion. It has puzzled me for years why 'Never Let Her Slip Away' was not a successful song in the States. I don't know if it was even released there ? The UK chart has always been home to the occasional song that doesn't fit easily into a particular genre, while the USA charts have tended to pigeon-hole everything (and everybody). Going back to 'Never Let Her Slip Away', I can tell you the song is a joy to play at the piano with chords and bass lines that are rarely heard in most mainstream chart music. Add in to the mix the west coast harmonies, jazzy sax solo and the cheap synthesizer that inspired the song in the first place (it was never used before or heard since) and, I have to say, it's an amazing record - right out of left field. By the way, Timothy Schmit sang one of the backing vocal parts then went straight off to an Eagles recording session where they produced 'Heartache Tonight', a # 1 US smash. Compare the 2 recordings: www.youtube.com/watch?v=EVlQgxy15D4www.youtube.com/watch?v=DNCx7LDv7NgI rate Andrew Gold right up there with the likes of Brian Wilson (who Gold worked with). So it seems did Linda Ronstadt, Art Garfunkel, Eric Carmen. Wynonna Judd, Stephen Bishop, 10cc and many more. It seems he was being treated for cancer which goes a long way to explaining his appearance on that youtube clip of 'Thank You For Being A Friend'.

It's actually the sax solo, that so many of you love, that puts me off the song in the main : just as a similar sax solo in Gerry Rafferty's 'Baker Street' makes me switch that off whenever I hear it. I guess I don't really like sax solos then ....
