'More than 100 Dad's Army episodes are only known to exist as audio recordings.' WHAT ?? Was that before Mainwaring regenerated into an Arthur Lowe lookalike?

Yes, I'm afraid that there's a number of mistakes in there. Anybody know who this Chris Kerry chap is?
The appeal also appeared on last night's PM programme on Radio 4, but that wasn't an exactly great piece of reportage either.
Even though there's a very accurate press release doing the rounds, they still seem to be making a lot of mistakes.

This is a bit disheartening to hear here .Is great that there is a renewed public appeal being stressed on the airwaves. However, when making HUGE errors such as these, does tend to make you wonder there a bit?Just a rather largish typo, needing to be properly rectified here.
Charles, think this is another typo,a rather large one.As states "Chris Kerry of Kaleidoscope".Who is obviously for Chris Perry (Not Kerry As Stated Online Here).Think is what you were leaning toward with the underlined K here in your above post.
Still, either way to see a web appeal as well as hear of an Radio appeal for missing material is still great news there.Always good to see any publicity when it comes to the ongoing search for missing material.Would of thought more would similarly be pleased here,( albeit flawed ) that an appeal was sent,or even considered at all here is a great glimmer for future press releases of this nature.Another Treasure Hunt campaign possibly?
Thanks for the post here Joe!
Hoping this might generate a recovery or two possibly?Maybe nothing at all,who can say of course here.Fingers crossed!!
Cheers,Lance.

i think they missed a trick when they launched the on line Desert Island Discs website. There are many many editions of this show which are missing and this would have been a good chance to do an appeal for any home recorded versions. Im sure some members of the public have some. perhaps someone should contact the BBC and ask them to put something about this on the island website? www.bbc.co.uk/radio4/features/desert-island-discs/find-a-castaway

It now says "Some Dad's Army episodes are only known to exist as audio recordings". So someone has noticed the error. Although it does still say "Chris Kerry".
Either that or they've been very successful already, having had approximately a hundred Dad's Army returns alone! ;D

While it is good to see something like this happen, it is sad to see where basic errors creep in on an article. Also I feel, sometimes that opportunities are missed in coverage. There was a link (possibly here), of a radio interview with the chap who recovered the Wheel in Space episode, and a sepereate one for the audio's of Not Only episodes. In both cases there was no one off sentance, or brief request for anyone out there who has audio collections or film collectors to contact " X department", or get in touch.

yes i am always perplexed that when there is talk of recovered material on a tv program that there is usually no appeal linked with it

Makes you wonder what hope we have of the BBC finding anything after blunders of this scale or if they really care shocking stuff.

Only three episodes of 'Dad's Army' are missing. These are all from series 2. 'The Loneliness of the Long Distance Walker, A Stripe for Frazer(soundtrack for this episode has been recovered), Under Fire. 'Operation Kilt' and 'The Battle of Godfrey's Cottage' were missing, but were recovered in 2001. They had apparently been shown to film excutives who were preparing the 'Dad's Army' film. They were then thrown out and rescued from a skip, as I recall. All of the missing episode scripts were among those adapted for radio in the 1970s and survive in this format.

There was talk, on this forum if I recall, that "Under Fire" was shown in New Zealand in 1986. Have any investigations been made into this possibility? Even if the master had been junked in the meantime VCRs were commonplace by that time so there's a chance that if the story is true then someone may have taped and kept it.

Can never understand why things were thrown in skips, when the BBC say that tape had to be re-used because of the expense, mixed messages really.

The recovered episodes were on film(tele recordings), and were dumped outside a film studio. They should have been returned to Jimmy Perry/David Croft, rather than dumped. Not the fault of the BBC in this case.
