The guy from Bournemouth, if real, could have been running a scam. In those days it was much more difficult to find out what did, or didn't, exist. You lead somebody on by supplying genuine stuff to gain credibility before getting a lot of money for something that doesn't exist.

Hacker: You said you'd heard this rumour, I said is it true, you said yes!
Bernard: I said yes, it was true that it was a rumour.
Hacker: You said you heard it was true!
Bernard: No, I said it was true that I heard it!

I met him. I wonder if he would really be a scammer if everyone knew where to find him.
