To be fair, some amateur might come up with a lead that the experienced people may never get to hear about unless the amateur does some digging around. Fair enough, if theres some negotiating to be done then get the RT involved. yes all experienced people were beginers once and there is no school of film collecting.

No school of film collecting, But now there are experienced collectors and episode hunters. who are willing to share information and know how with "amateurs".

I would say this place is as close to a school of film collecting/ episode hunting as ive seen. Lots to be learnt from the experts and enthusiasts. Chance finds do occur and this is a good place to learn about the breadth of missing material, including who.

This is my first posting For fear of eliciting the phrase, with a sigh "here we go again", my simple question is below, no doubt asked and answered a dozen times already, although I can't find them. I have discovered Series 1 1963, 'An Unearthly Child', episodes 1 - 4 (5 missing) 6 - 9 (10 - 15 missing) 16 - 29 (30 missing) 31 - 42 on the internet. Eight episodes out of 42 can't be too big a problem to locate and I'm sure the experienced ones amongst you can point me in the right direction. I do remember the first episodes but somewhere in the recesses of my memory I have a recollection of the first episode being repeated the following week, along with episode 2, because of a world cup football match had been shown in ITV at the same time but can find no reference to it anywhere. Does anyone else remember this? I also considered myself a good friend of Terry Walsh, stunt coordinator to Doctor Who from 1966 - 1979 and daytime job of taxi driver outside Edgware tube station. Does anyone remember Terry too? He sadly died in April 2002

The repeat of episode 1 was due to the JFK assassination, not a football match.

Sadly, it is quite a problem... otherwise, were it so easy to locate these episodes, they already would have been found. There's far fewer avenues available to find them these days than there were in the past. Most people are best advised to just keep their eyes open, look in junk shops, second hand shops, car boot sales, jumble sales, any place like that. It's very much a needle in a haystack seach (only more so; in that you don't even know if there's a needle to find), but the more pairs of eyes looking, the greater the chance of finding something if there's anything to find.

Am I to understand that despite locating all 35 episodes from the first series, An Unearthly Child on one website, the other eight don't exist elsewhere on the internet and are only available, if they still exist, as reel-to-reel?

Hi Larry,
There are 108 episodes of 'Doctor Who' missing from the BBC archives. Of the 8 stories in the first season, one seven part story is missing entirely (Marco Polo/Journey to Cathay) and the last is missing episodes 4&5 (The Reign of Terror). So there are 9 episodes missing from the first series.
The second series is missing just two episodes (The Crusade - Eps 2&4). After that, it gets pretty nightmarish with great swathes lost.
Regards,
Paul

Hi Paul,
Again, I'm uncertain if I understand correctly. You say there are nine episodes missing from the first series yet I have access and download facilities to episodes 1 - 4 (5 is missing) 6 - 9 (10 is missing) 11 (12 -15 are missing) 16 - 29 (30 is missing) 31 - 42. That's only seven missing episodes, unless there are more after episode 42. Exactly which ones are you missing?
I'm a little confused over the second series too. I'm currently watching episode two 'Dangerous Journey', apparently from the second series. Although you say it's The Crusade. As you've more experience in this than I have, could you elaborate please?
Regards
Larry

If you're referring to the 42 episodes of the first 1963-1964 series here, then the missing episodes would be Episodes 14-20 and 40 & 41. All the others exist.
