Having seen parts of the first colour series repeated on UK Gold a couple of weeks ago in glorious B/W ,Im wondering when they were last transmitted in colour before they were junked?

I always thought it was strange they junked the colour copy of the episode in which Albert harasses Harold for a COLOUR television set!

Any repeats would have probably been within the normal time limit in those days, which I think was 2 years.

Series five was repeated 13-9-71 to 25-10-71, while series six was repeated, (in a different order from the origianl sequence), 'twixt 1-11-71 to 3-1-72.

Im wondering if the episodes were sold abroad in colour format?or would they have been junked in 1972?,also is it feasible they may turn up in the Monkhouse archive?

No but as he had a video recorder in the sixties chances are there are a few missing things recorded on it.We are all waiting to know what they are.

Dont expect him to have everything, just thought it could be a possibility with him being a comedian and it being one of the greatest comedies ever written and performed!

But even *if* Bob Monkhouse taped it on his own video recorder, they'd be much the same quality as the tapes Ray Galton had made for *his* home video machine - monochrome and wobbly!
The best you could hope for if anything did return from O/S would be a b/w 16mm film print. (Unless someone knows of Canada or a US station playing it in NTSC?)

Just out of interest, does anyone know if actual colour recordings of Steptoe & Son (and also things like the 1970 series of Not Only But Also) were sold to countries such as Canada, Australia etc? "Were colour VT dupes circulated to overseas TV?" is what i'm asking. If so, it's always possible that copies are out there somewhere...

We were b/w until 1975, and the ABC kept ordering 16mm from the BBC until the bitter end. On the other hand, the Seven Network had colour tapes of LWT things like On The Buses in 1970 (even though the transmission was monochrome).

Mind you, even b/w 16 prints of those Steptoes would be a step up from domestic off-airs (and for Not Only...it would be a case of something rather than nothing at all)!

That should have been "16mm prints".

Colour VT copies of "Up Pompeii" were sent to Canada. They're now the only existing copies of some episodes.

Yes, I was thinking that myself. That applies to quite a few Doomwatch episodes too. So if it's possible with these (at the time) new series, then surely others that were already popular as well?
