Interesting bit of news www.southbankshow.com/coming_shows/show/68One of Mel's minions obviously reads these threads, as it was discussed here over a year ago. There has been much speculation on the state (or indeed if they exist?) of the colour master tapes. So it will be interesting to see what they come up with.

It was supposedly in colour, yes. Although the surviving copies seem to be b/w telerecordings that are in need of some restoration! Put 'em on DVD and release 'em!

Footnote I should have said 'color' as it would have been NTSC . ATV Elstree committed itself to NTSC very early on, then the UK changed its mind. However it did mean that programmes could be sold in N.America/Japan without using a video telerecording, and ' Goodbye again ' skits was sold to a famous comedy clip show (cant remember name) , rather like ' Marty ' skits were used on the Dean Martin Show.
In the UK we had to put up with the ATV video telerecordings back to PAL which looked dull, juddery and smeary. While the BBC could transcode cleanly electronically.

"Colour Master tapes" surely not - ATV only started colour in 1969 unfortunatley...
Still they retained more Pete and Dud than the BBC I suppose.

Nope, ATV and Lew Grade were anxious to get good sales of material to the States, so they were regulary filming things in Color NTSC from around 1964 onwards. Using Color TK41 NTSC cameras placed next to the 405 B/W in most cases.

ATV did use NTSC early on although by 1968 it's possible they were switching over to PAL (as BBC were already transmitting in it and other of the ITV companies were testing it out too). That doesn't really say whether or not Goodbye Again was made in PAL or NTSC but unless a colour master turns up, we can't be sure.

Yes, ATV were making colour shows by 1966 - as were otherf ITV companies such as Rediffusion - but i'm just wondering which colour system these Pete & Dud shows were made in. By 1968 they may have been using PAL as well as NTSC (certainly Thames were testing PAL in that year).

I don't know if they were originated in PAL or NTSC, but there must have been NTSC tapes at one stage as at least two of the shows (I've only found dates for two so far) were screened in the USA in 1969.

By 1968 they may have been using PAL as well as NTSC (certainly Thames were testing PAL in that year). PAL had been decided on by then as the British standard - indeed BBC2 had been broadcasting in PAL colour since November 1967 (the official launch date - some things went out in colour earlier on a test tx basis, such as Wimbledon). ABC had been doing colour tests at Teddington since 1962 in NTSC, SECAM and PAL, and all gear installed there after a certain point was switchable multi-standard. ATV carried on using NTSC after PAL had been decided on, for reasons of export compatibility.

Colour definitely began on BBC-2 on 1/7/67. This was an official start date though, not on a testing basis (the testing period began in 1964 out of official programme hours, pre-PAL). It was stated that about 20% of programmes were in colour initially in July '67. By December this was ceremoniously upped to 80%.
