On one of the Lost In Time DVDs, there's an easter egg of a testcard and countdown clock for ep 3 of 'The Crusade', which by the looks of it, is sourced from a VT rather than TR.
Where did this come from? Why does it exist?

It will be the clock from the film print, Vidfired.

It's possible that it came from the T/R, but surprising if it did - I've seen a lot of T/Rs (not that particular one) and NONE of them have had video countdown clocks printed into the film, just a standard BBC film countdown leader.

I'm pretty sure the film print of the Pilot episode has a VT clock on it, although that could be because it was made for internal use. Fairly certain that I remember seeing others, too, though I could be mistaken. Of course, as there are no Who VTs in existence, it could only have come from a film print, surely..? Maybe the only reason it's on the DVD is because it's so unusual..?

My experience with TRs is somewhat different to Steven's - the ones that I have seen generally have countdown clocks at the start. Then again, they are ITV ones but it shows that there obviously was no universal standard regarding countdowns at that time.

Ken - I'm only talking about Dr. Who T/Rs. I've seen dozens of them, and none of them had the clocks - but it's possible that Crusaders is an unusual one for some reason... Rob - The pilot wasn't T/R'd by enterprises for overseas sales (unlike the others), so that one would be a different story I would think.. Maybe the existing Crusaders (3) prints/negs were done for some other purpose and the clocks were left in... Steve R or Paul V would probably know... In case anyone is curious - here's what the start of a Dr. Who T/R generally looks like. www.16mm-films.net/who/wholeader.avi

There's definitely a contdown clock on the print of the pilot and you can hear someone giving the cast directions in the background.

There's a clock on the front of a couple of old Who episodes as I recall. The Crusade 3, the pilot and at least one other if my memory serves me right. Someone else on this forum might recall more details than I do.
StevenS - was your countdown from Ab Snowmen 2? Looks to me like the film inserts - which reminds me, I'll have to dig my copy out. The picture quality is really rather lovely.

Hi Anthony, No, it's not from film inserts... I made that video clip a few years ago to show someone what it looked like and I think I used an episode of "The Krotons" but don't quote me on that...

There are various countdown clocks on BBC film recordings. The clocks were only replaced by leaders on the physical negatives to enable subsequent prints to have the correct leader. However, when prints were made in parallel with the negative, the clocks remain, so the Pilot, which was a direct positive fom the orginal VT retains the clock. Episode 3 of 'The Crusade' also has the clocks as do some episodes of 'The Web Planet' from the returned editions from Nigeria.
There are one or two others which I don't recall.
Generally, direct positive film recordings retain the clocks. I returned a BBC West regional programme 'The Scrumpy and Western Show' in 1988. That was a direct pos which retained the original clock.
