Interesting choices. I notice that 'Death of a Clown' is included. Could it possibly be from that recovered '67 totp?. Probably not! here's the link www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b012ht1wI suspect it may be represented as part of the 1977 Xmas concert medley version (with Well Respected Man and Sunny Afternoon) but here's hoping that turns out to be incorrect. I always find these at the BBC programmes turn up something half interesting so I'm quietly hopeful we'll be pleasantly surprised with somethign here.

They do throw a few nice rare curveballs in now and then but the omission of the 'Once More With Felix' clip is SO incredibly dissapointing mainly because there's so little footage of 'Village Green..' era Kinks. And for the BBC to be sitting on such a glorious colour clip like the 'Felix' one, and for 'Village Green..' to be so lauded now by everyone in mainstream pop as one of the truly great albums of all time makes this clips omission even more soul destroying. We love the Beeb with all our heart but sometimes you just want to kick Auntie square in the fanny..!! T.

Without the 3 TOTP performances from "abroad" - which are broadcastable in this guise - and the wonderful Julie Felix material this opportunity represents nothing but a massive missed opportunity. Not only are Sunny Afternoon & Autumn Almanac wonderful tracks they are also excellent examples of the "vibe" and presentation of mid-60s TOTP (though I do accept that the Sunny Afternoon they used is superior despite the wobbly sound - which itself blows the "broadcastable" argument out of the water)

Thoughts on Dave Davies Kinkdom.
I enjoyed it. Dave comes across as an interesting character who has something worthwhile to say. I found a lot of his comments very pertinent.
Shame that the clips seems to come under the "they're under 30 second so we can use them" category. They looked like the 80's vhs we all have.
A deluxe version of these docus with full length clips from the master tapes would be more in order.
I'd have liked to see more of his family but maybe he wanted to protect them.
Not one mention of Mick Avory! Maybe he still hasn't forgiven him for trying to decapitate him!
He spoke with great fondness of Pete. I liked that clip where Pete, Ray and Dave all joined hands.
It was good to see that songwriting show from the beeb clip. This deserves a full repeat!
I found the time scale a little odd. They seemed to dwell on certain time periods for too long then rushed through some others.
Glad to see those rare top of the pops clips getting some brief airing.
Overall though well worth a look.
Glad he seems happy enough and likes wandering around the countryside.

I was actually fairly disgusted with the fact that two recent 'Jools Holland' performances were shown, which meant that the precious archive clips were cropped and looked horrible!
Was it really necessary to show those two 2007 and 2010 clips? No.

Yeah overall I though the Dave doc was good, bit more diffuse than the Ray doc.
1) the archive footage wasn't as amazingly unseen and new as in the Ray doc, but we did get more of the fascinating home movie footage (Ray knocking a paper out of Pete's hand) and that 1968 BBC interview. The clip of them linking hands is from the very tail end of the "Where the Action Is" perfromance of "Everybody's Gonna Be Happy" btw.
2) Compared to the Ray doc, I thought a lot of the linking devices were pretty naff: A tacky looking computer enhanched graphic of Pete's nose growing being a particular low point.
3)Since Mick had been used as a secondary voice in the Ray doc, Temple seemed to want to do the same for Pete commenting on Dave in this one, except he had to use archive film due to his passing. One of those clips was reused (although I'd swear it was a different camera angle) from the 1995 "I'm Not Everybody Else" doc: Pete was painfully underused in that 1995 doc considering he was interviewed especially for it (just two brief appearances) and I've sometimes wondered if raw footage of the full interview could have survived. The other clip came from "Brothers in Arms".

They didn't bother to show anything of 'Death of a Clown' from TOTP 1967, even though it was returned to the BBC earlier this year.
The usual BBC incompetence.

To be fair, we don't know if it's in a broadcastable state. The Pink Floyd clip from the same find apparently loses picture several times and chances are the TOTP DOTC could be in a simliar state. (and I know the "Sunny Afternoon" clip they used had dodgy audio but the visuals were intact: more of a necessity for broadcast standard it would seem)

What's irritating is that the Dave Davies documentary (which I thought was an excellent and fresh look at it's subject matter, by the way) used clips from not only the Julie Felix appearance but also the TOTP performances of Autumn Almanac and Wonderboy! So the BBC obviously know about this footage and have access to it, yet still ignored it all when putting together the "Kinks At The BBC" compilation (which would have been a far more interesting programme had they been included in their entirety).

Yes definitely, and the inclusion of at least the 'Felix' clips means they wouldn't need to have shown the recent stuff, thus keeping the 4:3 aspect ratio!

Oh dear! The Kinks at the BBC captions claimed that Sunny Afternoon was no 1 boths sides of the Atlantic! Sack that 20 year old researcher! It was number 1 both sides of the Atlantic, it was number one in Canada although the caption should of been more specific ;D Agree with Laurence about the Autumn Almanac and Wonderboy clips they definitely should of been shown from TOTP as they exist in broadcast quality so no excuse there, showing snippets of them to tease the viewers was naughty although both tracks are available on DVD. All in all I thought the "Kinks At The BBC" compilation was quite good, Sunny Afternoon was a surprise even with the dodgy audio track, the footage was in good nick and understandably they didn't show the TOTP 1966 clip because of the awful quality (I'm assuming Dave Davies Death of a Clown is in the same state). Nice for the 'Apeman' footage to get an airing too, has this been shown since it's original broadcast? Lola has been shown numerous times on TOTP2 but I cannot recall Apeman ever being shown. Another bonus was there was no logo on the "Kinks At The BBC" compilation
