I will be looking forward to this. I used to enjoy this on the radio when I was a kid.

its a brilliant idea and a reason why programs should be returned to the archives. This access to archive material Is a recent development and could lead to more stuff becoming available.
I wonder how many episodes of Desert Island Discs the BBC has. I guess quite a few were never kept. I believe the William Hartnell appearance was wiped and is not thought to exist. I'm sure Doctor Who fans would love to hear that episode

They've so far gone back to 1986 with archive episodes; a great resource, so well done to the BBC.
The earliest surviving episode is from 25 April 1951, with Margaret Lockwood. In total, 34 episodes survive from the 1950s. Many more are missing from the 1960s and 1970s. Maybe when they upload more archive episodes and gaps are shown, that could be a chance for them to appeal for the missing ones.

I have to say i think missed a real opportunity to ask for missing episodes when they did the 70th anniversary programs

Wow, is it really 30 years since Paul McCartney appeared on Desert Island Discs? Just did a search for it as I remember listening to the original broadcast and was hoping to listen to it again - I trust it still exists and will be added at a later date...
Hmmm... a typo on his No.8 record choice. It should read 'The Country Hams' who were, of course, Paul, Linda, Denny Laine, Jimmy McCulloch, Geoff Britton, Floyd Cramer and Chet Atkins.
It's great to see the BBC opening up their archives like this. Several generations of entertainment available at the click of a button...

Great news! There are now 1571 episodes from the last 70 years of Desert Island Discs that are available for free download including the Paul McCartney episode I mentioned (Episode 1630 from 1982) and even one with Gary Glitter (1981)! None from the 1940s, unfortunately; only 6 from the 50's and 19 from the 60's, but from 1976 onwards it seems to be complete :-) www.bbc.co.uk/radio4/features/desert-island-discs
