Related to his sad death, the BBC 1 O Clock News today just showed a clip of Gerry singing Stuck In The Middle, captioned "Top Of The Pops 1973", which is supposedly missing! It certainly looked like TOTP. I wonder where this one came from?!?

Really? Stealer's Wheel were on 18/05/73, 01/06/73 and 15/06/73 (repeat). I believe they're all missing as you say. 01/06/73 has a Pan's People performance floating about somewhere in the collector's market. This NEEDS to be investigated! BBC News is not an iPlayer programme, so I can't check. If anyone out there has anyway of getting a screen grab, SOMEHOW - I can identify if it is TOTP. ANYONE? Please....

Well, I saw it myself. I can recognise TOTP as well as anyone. I have all those dates myself too as I researched a lot of them for the BBC's TOTP database.
Interestingly, myself and a few others have often related of a clip used in Pop Quiz back in the '80s for the song, which may have been TOTP (too long ago to say for sure now). It hasn't surfaced in recent years at all though, if it is the same one.
I wonder what hat this clip was pulled out of?!? Someone will surely have recorded the 1 O Clock News out there though. Also, the same sequence may well be repeated at 6. Keep 'em peeled!

I wasn't doubting you Laurence, and I apologize - re-reading my comments - if it came across that way. No slight intended, of course.
Oddly enough I was looking at some Pop Quiz's earlier today! Nothing found. Still some to watch. If there is anyway someone can record the clip if it is shown again at 6 or later, please do, and put some screen grabs up. It's not on iPlayer, so I haven't seen it myself!

I've jut checked the 6 o'clock edition which I got from ( reference to torrent site deleted by moderator) but it wasn't even mentioned! Damn BBC! :-) Well, I saw it myself. How can you get the 6 O Clock News before it's even transmitted, Chris?!? It'll be shown in about 3 hours and 20 minutes time!

I just checked on the BBC red button entertainment channel. On there they're showing the video of Baker St. I've set up my sky+ box to record the 3 o'clcok news on the BBC 24 news channel. We'll see...

By the way, it was BBC-1 that showed the clip at 1 'o' clock. Not sure if any other BBC channels will screen it but you never know...

The News Channel is a bit more 'internationalist' (watched globally), so may not be on there. Nonetheless, worth a go, fingers crossed.

He will be sadly missed, as a teenager i had most of Stealer's wheels Albums and Singles and also Gerry's solo material. The footage i saw was on bbc news 24 about 3.50pm and what i saw of Stuck in the middle had a green back ground to it, no idea where this comes from although didn't Stealers Wheel perform on the OGWT ?

OK, it was on BBC News 24 (at 3:54) so there's a good chance it will be on the main news at 6 pm The clip included the Baker Street video and Paul Gambaccini talking about him. Then audio of Stuck In The Middle started over what looked like a promo video, followed by close up footage of Rafferty on, what very much looked like, TOTP. Still over the same audio - slightly out of sync. (It may be the the surviving clip was a muted copy ?) Just a few seconds but long enough for a clue to emerge. In the bottom right of the screen somebody wearing a hat was dancing and briefly came into shot.

Thank you Gary and Mark, much appreciated. The BBC say it's from TOTP, Laurence thinks so, the circumstantial evidence is there too - so it's another TOTP 'find' (i.e, that we didn't know existed for sure, even if some people at the Beeb did....
so now....to ascertain the date - it's either 18/05/73 or 01/06/73 (as 15/06/73 was a repeat).
I mean there are other questions - what's the origin, how long have the Beeb known about it, have they got anymore of the show, et cetera, but let's work out what one it originates from.
With thanks to Pete Seaton, here are the two line-ups from 1973....
""TOP OF THE POPS 18/05/73 Introduced by Noel Edmonds Chicory Tip - Good grief Christina (Studio) Rpt David Bowie - Drive in Saturday (Promo) Medicine Head - One and one is one (Disc) Nazareth - Broken down angel (Studio) Rpt New World - Roof top singing (Studio) Perry Como - And I love you so (Promo) Stealers Wheel - Stuck in the middle (Studio) Detroit Emeralds - Could it be i’m falling in love (Disc) Sweet - Hell raiser (Studio) Wizzard - See my baby jive (Studio) (Credits) >> Musical Director - Johnny Pearson, Choreography - Flick Colby, Sound - Richard Chamberlain, Produced by Johnnie Stewart""
and
TOP OF THE POPS 01/06/73 Introduced by Kenny Everett 10cc - Rubber bullets (Disc) Elvis Presley - Pork salad Annie (Promo) First Choice - Armed and extremely dangerous (Disc) Fleetwood Mac - Albatross (Promo) Stealers Wheel - Stuck in the middle (Studio) Suzi Quatro - Can the can (Studio) T.Rex - The groover (Studio) (missing) New Seekers - Goodbye is just another word (Studio) Partridge Family - Walking in the rain (Disc) Wizzard - See my baby jive (Studio) Rpt""
