Is that Saturday Banana that's been on the collectors' circuit for years an actual off-air then? It's so ramshackle I always assumed it had to be an as-live run-through they'd recorded and kept for some reason.

From what I gather - there is a Xmas edition in broadcast quality, and there is the one at Wessex which was donated and comes from a domestic video recording, converted to DVD. I am currently trying to locate some more footage, and news when I can tell you, hopefully soon.

NEWS! A different section of clips from Saturday Banana appeared on youtube:- www.youtube.com/watch?v=GvSE7_33bXIThe current archived ones are episodes 19 and 21, both from November 1978. As this clip had more several different title sequences, I thought I'd get in touch with the poster, and he has been in contact with Kal, and he is a member of the Forum and sending the clips in! Another find! I would publicly like to thank the poster for being co-operative and helpful in contacting Kal at my suggestion and sending the material to them. Thank you so much. On a related subject, I am still waiting for a copy of a partial domestic recording of Saturday Banana (NOT November '78) and an episode of Roadshow Disco to be sent to me by someone else.

I haven't found anything today yet!

The titles from the youtube poster are being sent to Kal. They are on a high quality DVD, rather than film, but that is how the poster got them.
Nonetheless, another recovery is imminent here.
Also I have tracked down a Saturday Banana 'transferred from a dodgy u-Matic' in Australia.
I am unaware if this is one of the two archived episodes or not an I am awaiting a response.
The owner is involved in restoration, and very good at it too, and if it missing, will have made the quality far better.

Yes, can you find some Colour Me Pop next please, Ray! Follow that with some '60s TOTP, Web Of Fear, early Ace Of Wands and series 3 Out Of The Unknown...

I'm actively looking for 60's TOTPs and Colour Me Pop.
There IS a '68 TOTP out there, in full. I have little more detail than that.
As my knowledge of anything but music (and to a small degree football and children's TV) is appalling, what channels were Web of Fear and Ace of Wands on? OOTU was Rediffussion, right?
Apart from DNAYS, I leave the Rediffussion searching to TD, in general. That guy's brilliant.

I'm intrigued by the talk of a '68 TOTP though......! OOTU was BBC. Ace Of Wands was Thames. Web Of Fear? So there's one person in the world that doesn't know what Web Of Fear is (Dr.Who)! I didn't mention the series it came from as I thought that would be taken as read by all. Keep at it, Ray!

I have been told by a VERY reliable source that there is a 68 TOTP. But the owner won't copy or sell.
I have a really scanty knowledge on many dramas and comedies, basically everything that isn't music really.
Also, read the post on 08/09/77 TOTP that will be up in 5 mins.

The Saturday Banana is Australia (screenshots kindly sent to me by the owner, who is an expert in video and audio restoration) is the same as the one that exists in the Southern archive.
I have more details on the existing clip by a co-host, here follows an edited quote:-
""This isn't the only surviving recording. I guested twice, and was on the show with George Chakiris, and Sparks. I have a 15 minute recording, taken at the time, now transferred to DVD. I did two wildlife slots, one with a grass snake and toad, which tried to escape into the monitor hole, and one with a large fruit bat. All a bit mad, but I WAS only about 17 or 18. Kept my presenter badge and T shirt. Sat next to Susan Tully, opposite Bill. Also did the pilot, with Jon Snow guesting.""
I have, as you may have gathered, been in touch with the gentleman quoted.

The only two programmes I am willing to risk the tag 'CONFIRMED RECOVERY' with on my own account, without checking with the BBC or Kal or an archive holder are Top of the Pops (naturally!), and the Saturday Banana. So - despite the fairly low quality - it is with great pleasure I present this clip of the Group Whirlwind from a Autumn '78 show. Tx date, unknown, but I have done repeated checks to see if it either of the shows that are 'archived' (the full one, or the Wessex off-air), and it is neither! www.youtube.com/user/nickdadd#p/a/u/0/NOfJMF1LTbMThe poster Nick Dadd says:- ""Lets go back to the autumn of 1978 for this one. In the days before video recorders Whirlwind made an appearance on the TV show 'Saturday Banana' hosted by Bill Oddie and a certain Metal Mickey. The appearance was recorded straight from the TV set on cine camera by bass player Chris Emo's dad. Here for the first time in 30 years is a record of that appearance from the Whirlwind archive. Line up on this day was Nigel Dixon, Mick Lewis, Rob Russell, Gary Hassett and Chris Emo. Look out for guitarist Mick Lewis and Rob Russell on piano, both still going strong with Whirlwind in 2010 and still Blowing Up A Storm with new band mates Nick Dadd, Bob MacDonald and James Bell. Best viewed in full screen mode."" In addition, we have spoken online, and Nick says:- ""Hi Ray, I believe this is the only surviving footage from this episode. I don't know the exact date but it was autumn 1978. I tried to find out if Southern TV would have had it in perfect quality but as you say they appear to have wiped everything except from an interview clip from one episode and I believe the 1979 Christmas show. This clip was filmed off the tele with a cine camera! But thank god it was as it appears to be the only footage in existence of the Whirlwind appearance. The clip I have is a bit longer as it features Whirlwind backing an Elvis impersonater for about 30 seconds after their song. I obviously had to edit it down to make the clearest footage fit the soundtrack. The soundtrack is the original sound used on the show as it was recorded in the studio to mime to and the sound tape was still within the band, hence the quality of the sound. Other than that I'm afraid I don't know much more. Does your expertise stretch abroad? There are clips of the band on a French TV special on youtube that we would love to locate more of and an appearance on a Dutch equivalent and Spanish equivalent of Top of the Pops from 1978 that we haven't got a clue where to start with and don't even know if they still exist. The other band members can't remember the Channels after all this time and it was before I was with the band. If you have any ideas where I can start looking I'd be grateful. Good luck with your ongoing research. Nick"" So, if anyone has any clips of Whirlwind from the Netherlands or Spanish TV, do let me know.
