Wonder if there is any footage of Ytv floating around somewhere, might be a few Leeds games in there somewhere ;D Yorkshire TV's 1990 VHS release '180 Leeds United Goals' seems to indicate there are plenty of Leeds games still in their archive. The difficulty is nobody seems to know what is still available in the ITV archives prior to 1968 when the broadcast licences changed. I know for certain both the 1966 World Cup Final and 1967 England v Scotland game, which was released on DVD, have been in around for a few years. While the 11th May 1968 game between Newcastle United and Manchester City, broadcast by Tyne Tees is circulating amongst collectors.

Is that the 17-minute edit that came out on VHS in the late eighties or a longer version? The VHS was a very poor quality telecine released by "Vertex Film Labs". As Tyne Tees' Shoot programme was scheduled for 35 minutes that weekend I would love to know if a longer (better quality) version exists. In fact I seem to recall Chris Sievey (aka Frank Sidebottom) was selling a reel of film of that game on ebay a couple of years ago. Or maybe I dreamed that bit.

Yes this is the only version I'm aware of that exists outside of Tyne Tees themselves. What is strange is even when ITV make a football documentary from this mid sixties period they use BBC's archive to illustrate a point.

Not necesarily. Both BBC Scotland and STV junked most of their highlights after broadcast but did edit the goals together on compilation reels. There are some highlights archived but much is lost and people always make the mistake of assuming because they've seen the goals from a particular game the whole match exists. One ex STV employee recently told me how he came accross a skip full of film reels of edited football ready to be dumped a few years back which he managed to save "what he could from" before persuading the powers that be to get the footage digitalised. He wasn't able to rescue the entire contents though. I believe most of the ITV Sport archive consists of either highlights or complete games but there is much more football which they don't have in the hands of the various regions who may or may not have had a similar policy to their Scottish counterparts.

Swedish Satellite network Viasat Sport 2 broadcast the majority of Match of the Day games 1964/65 to the beginning on 1968/69 when the BBC started to broadcast games in colour. Viasat then continued again from 1980/81 so it's got to be assumed (I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong) most of these game were archived but in black and white. As if to back this up although ESPN showed some individual games from the seventies in colour both UK Gold repeats and Bobby Charlton's Scrapbook, broadcast on Sky, showed highlighted programmes in black and white. I don't know about Scottish football but it's quite common to find complete editions from "The Big Match" and Granada's "Football" from the late sixties early seventies. Unfortunatly as I pointed out due to it's regional nature there is no difinitive of what exists.

There is very little 70s stuff on the 180 Leeds goals in fact if you go through them, whilst there is some from the 70s , most are in fact from 89/91, in fact most Leeds fans i know didnt buy it , as we had info that there was very little new a "new" Leedds Dvd has just been made avaiable in the Leeds club shop entilted 100 Leeds goals (more or less the same as 180) and bizzarely the 9th best ever was Brian Flynns winner at Old trafford on 28/02/81, in which according to Granada this game does not excist , it was telivised that we, unbelivably i bumped into Brian flynn himself at a Leeds game last season,he told me that itv contacted him and asked him if he had footage of it, as they wanted to show it prior to the Clash last season at Old trafford between Man utd/Leeds , he said he didnt have any i think a few Leeds fans may have it somewhere , Flynn i believe has contacted Granada to see if they have any in archives

It wasn't a major surprise at the time as both teams were pretty poor in 1981. Dave Merrington had just been replaced by Allan Clarke as manager due to Leeds poor start in October 1980. The only other possible reason the goal could survive would be if Manchester United were filming the game for training purposes and offered a copy to either Granada (which you say they didn't) or BBC North West. Jan Molby managed to aquire a couple of his goals by this manor.

Dave Merrington of course only managed Leeds for one match, and his next job as manager (rather than in another role) was 15 years later at the mighty Saints.
Clubs occasionally have their own footage, although that is a more recent development.

Clubs occasionally have their own footage, although that is a more recent development. I don't think that's strictly true. I recently received a Chelsea collection from seasons 1969/70 and 1970/71. Each game is neatly edited into two minute highlight sections. One of these matches is the infamous 1970/71 game against Ipswich where Alan Hudson scored the 'goal' that never was. A portion of this clip was used by the BBC in their Match of the 70's series. So not lost.

Jeff, the point I was making was that clubs nowadays also often SHOOT their own footage - my comment was badly worded!
Chelsea-Ipswich, funny fixture, memory serves....
Ex-Saints defender David Webb scored a hat-trick for Chelsea against Ipswich while playing as a defender (very rare, although Steve Nicol did it for Liverpool many years later), and, of course the same David Webb played IN GOAL for Chelsea v Ipswich when Bonetti and John Phillips were injured and the young Steve Sherwood was unavailable. And David Webb kept a clean sheet!
(my favourite Chelsea clip is when they get 'rogered by Rotherham'. Not my words, the words of Danny Baker, on 'Right Hammerings'. Rotherham 6, Chelsea 0! Tee hee!!!!)

Jan Molby managed to aquire a couple of his goals by this manor. There is also the possibility that news cameras were at the game. ITN/BBC News sometimes showed brief footage of a game that wasn't filmed for highlights programmes. ITN Source suggests there might be footage of this Leeds goal in their library... www.itnsource.com/shotlist//ITN/1981/02/28/108620/
