ABSO-BLEEDING-LUTELY, and I would recommend that every episode is trawled for stuff, not just Bowie!

Regarding Bob Pratt. Was he still saving stuff around 1978? Surely we can rule Musikladen out from being on one of his tapes? We are also forgetting the original promo of 'The Jean Genie' contains a large amount of concert footage. That is the most likely footage to be on Bob Pratts collection.

This seems to be the most likely scenario here Mike.Interestingly, was thinking along those same lines myself.Would seem to make the most sense.
I am with Ray,in that I would like to see a planned "trawl" through at some point in the near future!!
Cheers,Lance.

Thanks for the info, Gary. I don't have either of those shows (S04E03 and S03E08) so the info will come in useful for our definitive Pop Quiz catalogue: missingepisodes.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=totp&action=display&thread=6294The clips we're looking for most likely aired in 1981 or 1982 during the first two series of Pop Quiz, neither of which appear to have been catalogued properly yet.

Please do not take Boy George as gospel. Could it possibly have been a Jon Moss from Culture Club episode (Boy George's boyfriend at the time)? He appeared on the show twice - once in '83 and again in '84. Neither of his episodes seem to be available anywhere so they can't be ruled out. In face, George Michael appeared on the show twice too and no-one seems to have copies of his episodes either - very strange! You might think '83 or '84 is too late for missing clips but the Gerry Rafferty/Stealer's Wheel clip was on a 1984 episode that no-one seems to have (Series 4, Episode 2) so it's not that far-fetched...

I'm sorry but I can't clarify this one way or the other? I believe the Bowie JG episode was from either series 1, 2 or 3 with series 2 (Spring 1982) being the most likely of the three.
Again, thanks for everyones help with this.

No worries, Tim. It was just a shot in the dark to try and jog your memory a bit more.
The "archive" clips were mostly used in the individual round where Mike would ask a team member a question about an artist or group. Obviously, the questions were tailored so as to match the musical interests of the guest - I assume they would've been asked beforehand who their favourite artists were. So, for example, Phil Collins was asked a question about Martha Reeves, Phil Lynott was asked about Van Morrison, Morrissey was asked about Billy Fury, etc. All subjects that they were proven to be very knowledgeable about.
Therefore, the Jean Genie clip must have been shown to a Bowie fan, especially considering you mentioned their look of shock at seeing the clip again. If it was '81 or '82, as you suggest, it was only 8 or 9 years since the original TOTP broadcast so it obviously wouldn't have been considered "missing" at the time. Also, the state of the Dr. Who archive wasn't announced publicly until late 1981 so viewers wouldn't have been knowledgeable about the mass wipings that had gone on in the past.
So, who would be the most likely candidate to be asked a question about Bowie?

Logically I'd have to say Rick Wakeman (S02E03. 17 April 1982) but Bowie was an influence on many of the guests of the new bands at the time.

Interesting choice. Rick Wakeman also appeared in Series 5 of Pop Quiz. In that episode Chris Tarrant asked Rick a question about The Tubes after showing him a clip of "White Punks on Dope" from OGWT.
The BBC programme description for S02E03 is simply "studio vt, promo vt, cprt/ex lib film/vt, stills" so it's certainly a possibility, but then I suppose the same goes for most of Series 2.

Interestingly, the same sort of generic description ("studio vt, promo vt, cprt/ex lib film") appears on other PasBs where a reel of tape turned up - possibly uncatalogued - and it was decided to use it anyway (e.g. the Fleetwood Mac "Albatross" clip from Julie Felix, which also said something like ex vt / found in library; I have the PasB info filed away somewhere). Possibly the Bowie clip was on a similar sort of reel (Stealers Wheel too, which, as we know thanks to Ray, was dubbed for use in R&R Years / Pop Quiz). So it could be that the original Bowie dubbed clip is still floating around somewhere...

Come the Pop Quiz show and I usually had my VCR at-the-ready but for some reason I didn't. I phoned a fellow video trader at the time & he didn't even see the broadcast let alone record it! I was told later there was some sort of national broadcasting strike and the programme was only transmitted in a few UK areas? I've been trying to track down the Pop Quiz guest list for the show broadcast on August 1st 1981. It was suggested I check the corresponding Radio Times. However, it appears there was a dispute going on that prevented it being published that week! Could that also have disrupted the programme schedules and stopped Pop Quiz from being transmitted in some areas? S01E05 definitely needs to be checked by the BBC, if only to update INFAX with who the guests were on that particular show...

Has no-one considered that the Jean Genie clip may have been one of the videotapes stolen from Mike Reads' car ?

Dont know if anyone here cought Johnnie Walkers sounds of the 70's on Sunday but it featured a guy called John Henshall who was a cameraman on top of the pops, he mentions this clip on the broadcast available on i player 28 minutes in. And states that he has a film of him & Bowie on the show in 73, could this be the clip that turned up on pop quiz?
