I'll be watching this with real interest. I don't know what they have in store exactly but I hope it doesn't cost the earth to watch material. This history belongs to all of us.
I'd like to know what other people's top ten BBC choices would be in an ideal world if they could go online to watch anything of their choice? Some of mine would be The Wednesday Play, early Top Of The Pops, early Old Grey Whistle Test, The Troubleshooters, Omnibus, what there is of the different Apollo moon mission coverage, General Election coverage, lots of single plays, sixties sitcoms, early current affairs programmes.

Does anyone know if INFAX will ever be back online. It was a useful resource... while it lasted.

Hi Dan, I think INFAX has been replaced by the BBC Motion gallery - www.bbcmotiongallery.com/bbcarchive/You'll need to register as a researcher to use it but I found 3 episodes from a children's TV show that I was on in 1986 which I've now acquired through the BBC contributer's access website (cost me an arm and a leg but worth it!)

Thanks for that. Infax was better, but this is a lot better than nothing, and I didn't know about it until now!

Is this facility searchable, Don? I just tried registering as I wanted to check some BBC pop shows but can't seem to get it to do a search for me. Is there a way it can provide you with a list of programme editions in the archive under a given title?

Hi Christopher, Yes it's search-able, once you log in the search bar is in the top left corner.

I'm having probs with this, Don. I tried entering a few examples such as Z-Cars but no list of programmes is forthcoming tho theoretically there are many. Same with a few other things I tried. How do you get it to call up a list of episodes under a programme title? Am I missing something obvious here?

To search everything, I think you have to tick 'BBC Archive (text results)' in the drop-down menu that appears when you click inside the search field - but I suppose you already know that.
However...
I'm having similar problems. Unless I'm missing something as well, the search function just isn't very good.
I tried searching for 'Quatermass' (as that's a rather unique search term) and that seems to throw up a large number of relevant hits (either actual episodes or programmes in which the serials were discussed).
I have the imprssion a search for Z Cars will give you every record that contains, in title or description, the standalone letter 'Z' and the word 'cars'. As I said, not the best of search engines...

I just tried Motion Gallery myself to find out how useful it is. I repeated Chris' search (thinking Z-Cars a fairly safe bet to produce some kind of result bearing in mind over 300 episodes are existing) but all it came up with was a Brian Blessed interview for Wogan! I tried again with another long-running series for which I know there is a lot of existing material, Late Night Line- Up, and it drew a complete blank this time. I used your Suggestion, Koen, and also tried a few spelling / phrasing variations of the titles but no luck at all.
Seems a real shame that this facility is there but not very user-friendly. Has anybody else had the same problems? Is there a way round them that anyone has found?

The BBC Motion Gallery is the part of BBC Worldwide that deal with clip sales - the system you are getting access to is presumably for outside researchers but I don't know why it is so hit and miss. Perhaps most researchers end up talking to a 'real person'... It hasn't replaced Infax, which is still the basic system for the BBC archive. No idea either when that will be available again for the public, just that it is intended that it will be some day (or an equally useful alternative...)

Thanks for trying, guys. I get variable results depending on which series I search for so I guess it's the way the search engine is. I hope Infax makes a return some day as Motion Gallery is no substitute (tho it probably is not meant to be).
