In quite a few 60/70's TOTP (and other pop show) performances there was a bit of 'mugging' to the camera by band members of various groups - they didn't think in the pre-VCR world that there'd be people like us watching the clips in 30/40 years time. Mike Gibbins does a bit of that in the beginning of the song - but for a real classic clip of someone acting the fool in front of the cameras check out this clip of Badfinger miming to the peerless 'Carry On Till Tomorrow' from the Magic Christian, and watch Joey Molland early on; he gets nudged by Tommy Evans who is not quite as amused. Interestingly in the interview that precedes this (also somewhere else on YouTube), Joey Molland introduces himself as 'Stoned'....
The Beatles did a fair bit of mugging to the cameras - Lennon in the InterTel 'We Can Work It Out', for example, and in T Rex's Children of the Revolution promo check out Mickey Finn's OTT miming to the Kayman/Volman backing vocals which for campness eclipses anything that Dick Emery or Larry Grayson could do in the 70's.
Ah, the memories.........................................

That's the TOTP one, yes. There's also a colour clip from Beat Club existing of the song.

Interestingly enough, Joey Molland wasn't on the original recording. Ron Griffiths was, but by the time the record was released, he'd been repaced by Joey.

Speaking of "mugging" and Ron Griffiths, there is The Iveys colour promo film for "Maybe Tomorrow" where Ron seems to be mugging away in a bumbling manner!

There are some outtakes from this as well somewhere on YouTube. Despite the fact that the name Badfinger is associated with mismanagement and suicides, as well as the fantastic music they did, they also had a good sense of humour. Not sure if Maybe Tomorrow would have been shown, due to the miming ban....

It is, Alan. It's from the film the Magic Christian (which includes a unique version of Come and Get It in the credits). Produced by Paul McCartney (who plays on Come and Get It and Rock of All Ages, allegedly.)
McCartney told the badn to write a 'Simon and Garfunkel type piece'
