I don't know if this programme - which has mythical status among football fans of a certain age on Merseyside - will be of interest to others. I saw it as a young boy, and I'm really delighted that it has survived and that BBC4 is going to show it tomorrow.
Note to our younger viewers: Everton have won more championships than Spurs, Chelsea, Leeds and Man City put together.

It certainly does have "mythical" status here on Merseyside - its one of those programmes that seems to be well-remembered by everyone who saw it.
And I'm looking forward to seeing it for the first time!

The old man in the Golden Vision was an actor called Sammy Sharples. I work with his Grandson and helped him get a copy of this a few years ago from the BBC archives in Windmill Road. I also work with a few Everton supporters who have been wanting this released for years. I don't know if anyone from Everton made enquiries about this to the BBC but I can't help thinking it's an opportunity wasted by someone as it would have been a big seller. Now it's been broadcast, copies of it will be doing the rounds to people who didn't catch it and nobody will need to or want to pay for it.

Although it obviously was rather dated, for us thirty something blues, brought up on tales of the great Alex by our Dads,it was great to watch(and video!!),and gave a fantastic insight into football when it really was football, before all this all singing ,dancing Sky breed of fan took over.Whats our name?E-V-E-R-T-O-N!!!!!!!

Although it obviously was rather dated, for us thirty something blues, brought up on tales of the great Alex by our Dads,it was great to watch ....and indeed for us forty-something blues.....Well done BBC4, and thank God a similar programme doesn't exist about Man Utd. Actually what would be better is if a similar programme had existed about Man U (or perhaps given the era, about Spurs) and it HAD been wiped!!! Now for the purist archivists among us, for whom any programme lost is a tragedy, that might be blasphemy. But any supporter of a great but unfashionable club - Villa spring to mind as well as us - would concur with my sentiments!

I would imagine most non Evertonians viewing would have thought "Who is Alex Young/The Golden Vision?",I echo the sentiments previously if he had played for a more"fashionable" club, his name would never be forgotten, however the Vision is still revered on Merseyside,Alex himself speaks glowingly to this day of the affection we have for him, having met him a more modest hero you could not wish to meet, who cares if the rest of the country stare blankly when his name is mentioned,he will always have a golden halo and epitomise everything that the School of Science stands for.

Been waiting years for this, started going in 69. Only read about it tonight in The Echo and I've missed it. When is it being shown again.

Been waiting years for this, started going in 69. Only read about it tonight in The Echo and I've missed it. When is it being shown again. Doubt if it will be, old son. But don't worry - I'm sure enough people taped it to ensure that determined Blues will get to see it. My copy is doing the rounds at work at the moment, but let me know if you haven't managed to get a copy in the next few weeks, and I'll see what I can do......

Thats curious, two old boys from Merseyside have posted. Alec Lindsay played for the 'second eleven' ie Liverpool and Terry Darracott donned, I think, the Number 6 shirt after Colin Harvey. Nice to see some oldies too - Brian Labone and Gordon West. A fab play from the place where fab was created.
