Just been watching Rod's 'You Wear it Well' on Totp (the one where he has the words on paper). Does anybody know how it has survived? Is it an insert?. It's from either 17th Aug 72 or 31st Aug 72.

I raised this a few years back. It is an insert from that edition, the rest of the show does not survive. I thought it was from September 72 so it maybe from 31/8/72?

I've always wondered how this survives. The reason being that there were 'rumours' a few years back that another appearance from this 'possible' edition survives - ELO's 10538 Overture.
Here's the edition it may be from.......17th Aug 1972
Alice Cooper School's Out Jimmy Savile Repeated Clip Blackfoot Sue Standing In The Road Live In Studio Derek & The Dominos Layla Audience Duncan Browne Journey Live In Studio Electric Light Orchestra 10538 Overture Live In Studio Rod Stewart You Wear It Well Live In Studio Jackie Wilson I Get The Sweetest Feeling Pan's People Lynsey De Paul Sugar Me Live In Studio Procol Harum Conquistador Promo Video Mardi Gras Too Busy Thinking About My Baby Audience
Here's the other one....31st Aug 1972
Blackfoot Sue Standing In The Road Noel Edmunds Live In Studio Cliff Richard Living In Harmony Audience Elton John Honky Cat Live In Studio Faron Young It's Four In The Morning Promo Video Jackie Wilson I Get The Sweetest Feeling Pan's People Rod Stewart You Wear It Well Repeated Clip Roxy Music Virginia Plain Audience Slade Mama Weer All Crazee Now Live In Studio
Has anyone seen any other performances from these editions?

Ah yes I'm pretty sure I read somewhere once (maybe on here), that there is a TOTP compilation reel of isolated performances - if my memory is correct it contains Bowie, The Kinks, Free, Roxy Music and Rod Stewart amongst others. As previously stated, the Rod Stewart clip is from 17-8-72 (repeated 31-8-72). I have seen another clip from 17-8-72, but this is a bit of a cheat as it is Alice Cooper, which was on 28-12-72 (a repeat of a repeat!) which of course is in existence. Regards Mark

Some of these clips were used on Mike Read Pop Quiz in the early eighties. The two may not be unconnected.

Just an observation. It does seem that clips from that era had a better chance of surviving if they were repeated in a later edition...even if the actual shows were wiped.

Yes, although the TOTP compilation reel consists of purely 1970 / 71 performances (the Kinks and Free clips are on there) but the Rod Stewart appearance is not part of that. It seems it's a standalone clip, along with one or two others of a similar kind. No idea where these came from or how they managed to survive though, i'm afraid.

this can be located on TOTP2 19/09/01 & 08/01/02 & 03/09/02 & 13/02/04 (from 31/08/72)
its a shame more of these Orphans aren't repeated on a TOTP2 specials (even the poorest recorded)

It's interesting that this clip is a 'stand alone' , i wonder what was on the tape it was part of ?.
