I am currently transferring most of my old VHS tapes onto DVD and finding some lost personal treasures:- e.g. That's TV entertainment - BBC at 50, Aspel and Company - Paul McCartney, Tracy Ulman and Michael Aspel singing That'll be the day. Selections from BBCs Lime Grove Day.
The dilemma I have is that I will need to dispose of these old tapes...... How can I be certain I do not have any thing "missing"? (I started with VHS in 1985 but began in 1980 with V2000).....After transferring to DVD do I simply send my tapes to landfill or do I list on this forum what I have recovered? I am, of course, talking about material that I know hasn't been commercially released or I am certain does still exist. I am mainly talking about live transmissions, one off programmes rather than series. I doubt if I have anything really missing but I'm not certain. I think I still have to transfer Top of the Pops at 25, TotP '67, some Nationwide Dr who interviews, BSB Doctor Who week end (special interviews etc.) and at least 400 - 500 other videos!

It's hard to say conclusively if anything you have is missing. The earlier in the '80s the recordings are from, the greater chance there is of a rare item being taped (there were still some things going out live or programmes subsequently junked from the early '80s, such as The Adventure Game). As you say, live broadcasts are always the most likely candidates but you'll definitely have some missing material in the form of continuity between programmes (if it's on the recordings) as this was never officially archived. So that's always worth keeping. If in doubt, get rid of nowt!

Another very important factor to consider is that home burnt DVDs have a tendency towards impermanence. In a couple years time you may well get an error message saying something like 'cyclic redundancy check error' or some other dread phrase. Your treasured data is no longer readable through no fault of your own. So my advice to you is hang onto your tapes in case your digital transfer doesnt last forever, which they generaly dont. Not wishing to sound like the harbinger of doom, but its just as well to consider this!

Unless you make two copies on archive quality dvds of each tape. Either way, it will take some time to complete. You might as well make a list of everything as you go along. Keeping the tapes... strictly speaking that would be best but I can imagine they take a lot of space! Btw. sometimes there still is ceefax / teletext signal on these tapes, that shows the date, just in case you didn't write that down, isn't that so?

Hi www.lostshows.com should help you identify if any of your 1980-1990 material is missing, but I would recommend keeping your VHS tapes. Many people are now DVD-making like mad and we are storing more and more VHS collections from industry-people who are concerned to keep the original incase the DVD fails. c

In my experience, DVDs seem perfectly OK if the video is stored as DV data. You only get about 20 minutes on each disc, but it seems to be much more stable. I've recently made copies of every disc I made about five years ago, and not had a single problem. Video saved as straight DVDs is another matter....and it's lower quality, too.
Colin.

Even if the tapes are full of stuff from the early 80s that IS commercially available, its worth transferring and storing for the links, ads and idents. Ive got tons to transfer, but as you are aware, its real time recording. A time consuming process. Done a few edits and have quite a few DVDs with just the continuity links, ads and idents. Worth their weight in gold to nostalgia buffs, especially in another 10-15 years.

What would video 2000 make of teletext? I have never tried.

What would video 2000 make of teletext? I have never tried. Well Betamax is pretty good - I remember inadvertantly discovering the text signal on my machine many years ago!!
