Footnote to the Above that i think Big Match are about to release a series of shows from various clubs in the 70s/80s , dont know what Teams are avaiable , hopefully Mighty Leeds will be included The clubs available in the Big Match series appear t be limited so far to Manchester United, Tottenham, West Ham, Newcastle and Chelsea. The BBC, possibly ITV too, in the early seventies decided to save only the goals from matches in colour rather than the games themselves. There are exceptions in the archives but unless the new colour restoration system can be used to bring them back to their original condition they will remain probably in black and white. I noticed in the recent George Best bio that a clip from the 1970 Match of the Day game between Arsenal and Manchester United had gone through th colourization process.

I didn't see it to know but would this have just possibly been a colour telerecording?
The two shows are different channels though and their archive retention will therefore vary. I know that there is quite a lot of LWT's The Big Match surviving and ITV Sport seem to have kept material right back to the '60s on b/w VT in some instances, judging by some of the clips i've seen in various documentaries / anniversary shows from time to time. I don't know specifics unfortunately as i'm not a football fan!
I'm not sure about MOTD, though I imagine some (quite a lot?) of the complete editions will survive, certainly from the late '70s onwards, if not before. Clips documentaries use material though, including studio links / discussion. So some stuff clearly survives. I'm not sure about how many whole shows although at least one does seem to exist on t/r from the early days of '64 / '65 or so, when it was on BBC-2 (as i've seen titles and intros by Kenneth Wolstenholme, as well as match footage).

A large number of Match of the Day's from between 1964 to 1969 were shown a few years ago a Swedish satelite site and can be found on at least one auction site. The episodes were suddenly terminated when the BBC started broadcast MOTD in colour at the beginning of season 1969/70. The 1970 clash between Arsenal and Manchester Unitred has been shown several times on ESPN and always in black and white while the goals can be found in colour on the official MOTD video. The clip of George Best getting fouled from the game lasted no longer than seven seconds but appeared to have a tint to the colour which could well be damage rather than restoration. ESPN however also showed Bobby Charlton's farewell match at Chelsea from 1973 in colour while the studio discussion between Charlton, Bill Shankly and David Coleman was in black and white. This seems to be consistant with rumours of shows stored mostly in black and white from that period. I'm not sure when ITV began broadcasting the Big Match in colour but I've recently aquired some of their shows from season 1970/71 which appear to bare Laurence's comments about greater care taken over their early archive because everyone so far remains in colour.

This seems to be consistant with rumours of shows stored mostly in black and white from that period. In one of the MOTD books, one of the producers says that his first job on the show was to go through the last programme on the Monday, pick out the goals and any other stuff that was considered worth saving, and then chuck the rest in the bin. Most of the early seventies MOTDs only exist in black and white, a few years back they showed Barry Davies' studio intro into Hereford vs Newcastle, as part of the build-up to another Hereford match, and it was in black and white, as are the post-match interviews. On the 25 Years of Goal of the Month video, there's a whole Goal of the Month competition from 1974 in black and white, presumably one of the few that exists. I've also got the Beeb's History of Aston Villa video (I'm not a fan, I'm just nuts about old football) and there are some goals from 1975 in black and white. I dunno what happened there, I'm sure more or less every other goal from 1970 onwards is saved in colour, even if the rest of the shows definitely aren't.

There are more DVD's coming out soon for QPR, Everton and Aston Villa. In addition, there are plans for Big Match review of the season DVD's later in the year for the 1969/70-1982/83 period. I've got my fingers crossed for Leeds too as well as Forest, Wolves,Coventry, Stoke and a few others.
There's also a Liverpool one from the same series available now under the "Match of The Seventies" title.
As far as the archives go, The Big Match itself survives pretty much intact from 1969/70 on. The regional programmes shown in Anglia, Yorkshire and Granada are also pretty well served in the archives. Pretty much like these stations general archive.
Similarly, unfortunately ATV's Star Soccer has very few full programmes in existance. However, on most occasions, highlights of the games they broadcast were shown on other stations. Judging by my own collection, at least the goals and/or brief highlights will exist for a great majority of their output.
I know there are also missing games for Tyne Tees but I can't speak for the smaller stations-Southern, Westward and HTV.
For the BBC, apart for a couple of exceptions, at least the goals and brief highlights will exist for their output on MOTD from the outset. Again i'm going by my own collection (I've got all the club releases that they did from the 90's).
As far as the colour footage is concerned, I believe many shows exist in full as b&w telerecordings. I believe it's copies of these that have been sent to SKY and ESPN which have shown several classic matches over the years. However, in each case that i'm aware of there is footage of the goals in colour in the archive.
The only exception to this is a game between Ipswich & West Ham from 1975 which is on Ipswich's MOTD video.
Nick, if you are as passionate about I am about 70's football (and Steve Williams appears to be too) and are looking for old footage, those DVD's are a great place to start. If you are looking for more, there are loads of now deleted videos available on the net. E-asy enough to find, shall we say!
