I would imagine footage exists of them doing their hits, but it's likely to be not quite contemporary with the hits.
They both had very successful shows and would have included a hit or two per show. The shoiw might be a few years on from when the hit entered the charts.
Don't forget this was in the pre-video days where audiences would have been hungry for the same material, as they did not get this very often.

Looking through the Kal guide it seems that there is very little of Ken Dodd from the early days, though a couple of Blackpool shows have appeared on e-bay. From the list i assume the ones not listed as missing exist www.lostshows.com/default.aspx?search=ken+dodd

There was a Val Doonican documentary on BBC 4 about a year ago. It definitely included a clip of him singing 'Walk Tall'. He looked relatively young and the footage was in black and white.

I notice that the Lost Shows listing didn't mention Doddy's Music Box at all, although being an ABC show, it probably doesn't exist anyway. Didn't he also have a BBC series in the late '60s too (probably just named after him, although I don't recall the exact title as I never really liked him!)? The list mentions nothing in terms of his light entertainment stuff after 1966 either - I seem to recall watching such a show at this time that used both "Love Is Like A Violin" and "Happiness" as it's regular signature theme(s), so would the '62-'66 series have been this one?
I think there'll be more of Val Doonican singing his hits as more of his shows seem to exist in the archives (although, as Kev says, they probably aren't contemporary to the time they were hits). I can recall Dodd appearing on TOTP for "Tears" (and another of his singles which I can't recall the name of), although this seems to be missing and I can't say i've ever seen a clip of him in more recent times from any other show where he sings this song either. If Andrew Martin is reading this, he can probably answer the original question though.

Laurence!
One Doddy's Music Box exists.
In the Goodbye abc show there is a clip od David Hamilton on DMB; not sure if this from the one show or a separte missing clip.
Enjoyed seeing this at the kal event!

Ah, it's good to know a whole show survives (at the NFTVA?)! Thanks. This was definitely the one I liked most of all of Dodd's shows, particularly recalling David Hamilton's regular presence in it.
Yes, saw one of the "Goodbye To ABC " shows (North edition) at the NFT in December. A few good clips in there of otherwise missing stuff.

In the recent screening of The Rolf Harris Show on BBC4 Val Doonican was a guest and performed a song (sorry can't remember which one) this dated from the late 60's!

Hi Laurence i didnt mind him better than todays comedians etc he had a good voice i recently got Tears on a Heartbeat CD Comp and liked it more than back in 65.
