A reminder for those of you who don't know that Ed Doolan is broadcasting the lost 'Dad's Army' sketch from Christmas Night with the Stars 1968 today on his Radio WM show. It's on around 10.40am (in 40 mins or so) so listen if you can.
Merry Christmas to you all.
Cheers,
Paul

It is on Listen Again, here: www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/p001t552/Ed_Doolan_25_12_2008/Starts about 44 minutes in. Pity we have to make do with a crappy internet stream but hey, how many of these recoveries can be enjoyed so soon, and in full? If you're an anorak (like me) you may want to listen to the news bulletin following the Dad's Army broadcast, the fact this little piece has just been broadcast on BBC WM makes their own headlines.

Thanks Koen - I found it afterwards - I've been a lifelong fan and its great to hear this - a really nice christmas present - just a shame it was only on a local radio station and not broadcast on bbc7 or radio 2 or 4.

That was an absolutely fantastic slightly late Christmas present. Just wonderful to finally get to hear this episode after years of hoping against hope it may somehow be found. Thanks to Ed Doolan and the BBC. It has made my Christmas!

Out of interest, was the audio soundtrack of the rest of that Christmas Night With The Stars episode also recorded by Mr Doolan? Apparently among the sketches were segments from Oh Brother, Harry Worth and Not In Front of the Children, not to mention Morcambe and Wise as hosts. Does the soundtrack to these lost segments now exist too?

Does the soundtrack to these lost segments now exist too? Hi Dave. Yes, the show exists in its entirety. There's also quite a bit of music, like an extract from the Dusty Springfield show with Spike Milligan! Bizarre. Valentine Dyall also appears. Regards, Paul

Hi Dave.
I visited Ed tonight with one of the restoration experts who worked on 'Room at the Bottom' and we went through a few other things. Ed also recorded the 1969 'Christmas Night with the Stars' which does exist (at least the 'Dad's Army' bit) but he has the whole edition. Other gems include many editions of 'The Eamonn Andrews Show', Dee Time, 'Marty', 'Sunday Night at the London Palladium', World of Beachcomber', 'Me Mammy', 'Broaden Your Mind', 'Horne-A-Plenty', 'Curry and Chips', 'The Likely Lads', 'The Rolf Harris Show', various 'Points of View' and a single (and therefore unique) edition of 'Junior Points of View'.
There is still more to go through and I'll be posting a full list in a separate thread in the next few days.
Cheers,
Paul

thanks for the info there Paul. great work! obviously his entire collection is being given to bbc worldwide so i presume it will be available for commercial use when its all been digitised & catalogued? do you know who is handling it at the beeb? obviously he must've made the recordings via the aerial socket with a line out rather than microphone giving such clear quality.
great to see 'Dee time' as i believe he had some great musical guests singing live, most of which were wiped. think this collection must be the find of the decade!

Hi Paul. The collection isn't being given to anyone as such. Ed has kindly made it available to the BBC, not BBC Worldwide although they can license it if they wish. First and foremost, the material is for the use of the BBC when it eventually gets transferred. As there is quite a lot of material, I expect this to take some time; 3 tapes have been transferred in their entirety. I believe Ed said on his radio broadcast of 'Christmas Night with the Stars' that he used a couple of crocodile clips on his speaker terminals to get the signal off his TV. I suspect a rather heath robinson way of doing it... and possibly lethal! Regards, Paul

thanks alot Paul! yes its very generous indeed of Ed to allow his collection to be copied & for free, & yourself to publicise it. my friends company will be interested in licensing some of it as soon as it is all done too.
most off air audio is very poor as done with mics, so this collection will be in another league. also as alot of the music performances he recorded were live then licensing should be straightforward. thanks again!
ps can you pm me you're email address so we can get in contact with you or the relevant bbc dept.

Paul, that is fantastic to hear of more discoveries being made.
You mentioned The World of Beachcomber. I have an episode of that, perhaps two. Hilarious. Are there episodes missing? I didn't realise.
Was The Eamonn Andrews Show a talk show?
