Does anybody know why this classic series has never had a DVD release?

copyright/ownership issues as it was co-produced by the BBC and Universal...

AAaaah, I too, had often wondered the reason why it had never been released on disc. So THATS why. What great telly that was. Anthony Valentine gave the best performance of his life I feel. Watched it again a few weeks ago, but the only trouble is, my copy has the UK GOLD logo on the screen. Still, Beggars cant be choosers.

IIRC, the UK Gold run had episodes missing due to rights issues.

copyright/ownership issues as it was co-produced by the BBC and Universal... I never understand why television companies hide behind ownership issues when there is a genuine demand for a particular DVD release. Neither the BBC /Universal are going to lose money from releasing Colditz and there are probably several aging actors who might actually want to benefit fianancially while they are still living.

IIRC - the problem with UK Gold was the actors thought the amount they would get paid was an insult - so said No!

It's odd, but it happens from time to time. The Dr Who telemovie from 1996 hasn't been released on DVD outside the UK because of rights issues between the Beeb and Universal as well. Another example is the 1997-2002 series Earth: Final Conflict, whose first two seasons are owned by Universal (having been originally co-produced by Polygram, whom Universal later swallowed-up), whilst the later three were owned by different hands. So far season one has been released on DVD in the UK and Australia by Universal, whilst seasons three-to-five have been released on DVD in the US by ADV. It's a weird impasse that's been going on for a while now!

Yesterday are very good at repeating classic TV. However, it should be pointed out that they do have something of a reputation for cutting their stuff to pieces.
'Lipstick On Your Collar' was heavily cut before its repeat. I believe that Poldark was edited as well. Yesterday will probably just rerun the old UK Gold tapes.
