A question comes to mind:
All this talk about "private collectors" and "private collections." Well, could someone tell me about these collections? For instance: most of the collections consist of 35 mm films from 1933 to 1972, usually the collections number in the 100 to 150 item collections.
Seriously, I've got these sort of images in my mind like the last scene in Raider of the Lost Ark, you know, a warehouse the size of an office building, thousands of crates.

most of the film collectors I've seen fall into 2 categories, those who have a room or garage given over to neat rows and shelving, the other type lookes like someone has built a house around a scrap yard with film cans everywhere, as for types of film most people choose 16mm but can have all gauges of film

I met one collector who also collected mannuals for archaic printers and photocopiers. He also had a large box full of his off cuts of pieces of wire since either the late 60s or 70s. He hadnt by his own admission ever used any of the wire off cuts he had stored. Im thinking he falls into the second category somehow.........

a hoarder of the non evil type which is what most tend to be I think adering you could always try some of the large museums, they usually have video machines along with tapes and sometimes TRs, they rarely know what they are and treat them as atrefacts to be stored and almost never checked, you may find a freindly curator, they may even let you work there part time as a volunteer.
