Unashamed plug (by me) for something that I'm only mentioning on here because of the intense interest in 1960s tv hardware. I'm selling off a chunk of my tv collection and this is one item that is almost impossible to find. I have no idea of the history of the tube, but it probably stretches back to the early 1960s (or late 50s). See: cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2238871200&category=933

yes, I was 'booted off' their forum this morning. you are allowed to discuss e-bay, but not sell on it!
if you read the remarkable essay on joining this society, you'll discover this.
since the BVWS publish '405 Alive', I'm quite amused by their terse reply:
'The forum is for discussing vintage radio and related subjects, NOT for plugging your eBay auctions. This was stated in the terms and conditions that you should have read when signing up. Your messages have been deleted. If you post any further such messages your membership will be cancelled and email address blocked.'
This is all rather odd as instead of simply deleting my post, the moderators took a good look before deciding that I wasn't offering an Emitron as they had originally thought. After that, they deleted my two posts.
Their site implies trading by commercial people isn't allowed, but private trading is.
Who knows!
Either way, I put up a rare item at a silly price (I'm not attempting to put a reserve on etc) and by cutting off my posting, it may not reach the collector who might treasure it.

How can old and rare materials expect to survive engulfed in red tape and petty bureaucracy...I thought we had left that behind in the real world?

yes! If you have the spare time, there is an amazing set of posts (see below) about needless frivolity at xmas! I've taken out the participants names.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Yesterday (Christmas day) I had to delete three messages from the forum. All three were posted by regulars (people with more than ten previous postings). They where clearly written after a few too many Christmas indulgences, and were either pointless or were likely to cause irritation or bad feeling. None were intentionally reckless - just lacking the usual tact and manners, and likely to be misinterpreted. Normally I'd expect to have to remove no more than one per week (and recently I have hardly removed any, maybe one per month). Next year I may close the Forum from late Christmas Eve to early Boxing Day. I may close it this New Year's Eve too. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hi Paul. This is the 3rd time I have started to type a reply, and I still dont realy know what to say. As Mike says, its a pity. Shutting the site for a day or so spoils it for everyone else, but then why should you have to spend your time watching out for drunken postings. Whatever you decide, you have my full support. I assume you have notified the relavent members and told them what you have done? Have they apologised? Richard Logged

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- No, I didn't contact the individuals - I really couldn't be bothered to get into a discussion with them at the time (since they probably weren't clear-headed), and by the following day I had forgotten who they were. The hope is that they will see this message and take the hint when they find it was one of their messages that has been removed. Can I just ask everyone to think before you post, if you've had a few drinks. I think on New Years Eve I'll leave it open, but if I get any inappropriate postings I'll close it for the rest of the evening and reopen it in the morning. Logged

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- We don't do anything on New Year's Eve anyway - just a normal night (except we have trouble getting to sleep with the fireworks and drunks outside!).

Robert's comments on New Year's Resolutions is a good theme for another thread though, which I will start now.... Logged

I think these people forget that the main purpose of 'the net' is to pass on information. How can old and rare materials expect to survive engulfed in red tape and petty bureaucracy...I thought we had left that behind in the real world? they can be quite strict sometimes , think of it as old school, you could just try putting the web page and saying "have you seen this" that would not be plugging, mearly drawing attention, but you'd have to try it and see, but despite being sticklers for the rules "grammer school" style , they do have a lot of knowledgable people who post on there but the're not as libral as this forum
