No, very few. Most of the few that do exist are in sub-broadcast quality...

No, very few. Most of the few that do exist are in sub-broadcast quality... Surely they were always in sub-broadcast quality, even when they were shown .... awful, awful, programme.

I couldn't agree more. I was a Swap Shop kid and proud! I tried watching bits of Tiswas but thought that it was dreadful compared with Swap Shop. Even worse than Tiswas was Saturday Banana, which being a Southern production means that hardly anything of it still exists (only one complete show surviving?) which is just as well really considering how bad it was!

I know I could search on t'internet but is the situation re not many surviving programmes the same with Swap Shop? One of the reasons I ask is that somewhere in a vast pile of vhs tapes I've got some clips of Mat Irvine presenting a segment on Dr Who special effects (including a nice piece on Warriors' Gate)

Quite a few Swap Shops exist but not all by any means. Many of the early ones are missing.

There are Swap Shops missing from as late as 1981 - I've got the last minute or so of one of the missing ones on video.

She has also done a couple of Saturday morning guest/fill in slots in the last 6-9 months or so on BBC Southern Counties Radio for those that live in Surrey, Sussex and North East Hampshire. It's great to hear her dolcit tones on the radio.

Being a fan/collector of XTC, I remember two specials from 1984 featuring studio performances from their 'Big Express' album, but there were other bands too. Some were from the actual Saturday morning shows, but some were specially shot studio (mimed) performances.

I think the survival rate of the music specials is actually quite good - the Swap Shop website has a complete archive listing, which is very useful, and I seem to recall most of the earliest existing editions are the musical ones.

Just to add to that, I think the XTC one is more likely to be from Saturday Superstore - I'd imagine these probably still exist, but I seem to recall hearing there are a few missing SSs. Can anyone confirm?
