Ive just seen an officially released CD of Billy Fury's live sessions at Radio Luxembourg. Are these recordings taken from the studio masters or are they just scrubbed-up off air recordings made by fans.
Many other stars featured in their own shows on Lux during the late 50s/early 60s, including Cliff Richard, Marty Wilde, Helen Shapiro, Russ Conway, Lonnie Donegan. They all made unique audio recordings at Luxembourg's London studios. Have any of these survived?
I've long wondered whether any masters from Luxembourg have surfaced at all. I never hear them being spoken about. The usual story was that they were all bulk erased after broadcast.

If you're refering to the excellent Castle Sanctuary release, then the Luxembourg recordings are from The Tornados's Roger Lavern's own collection. According to the sleeve notes, whilst the live session was broadcast, Roger's Father recorded them off-air, and Roger's kept the recordings safely since then. It is a fabulous release!

Many thanks Darren for that info. Roger's dad must have had good equipment as recording Radio Lux was incredibly temperamental.

Not half, very frustrating. In my collection, the Sixties recordings tend to be better quality than the Seventies. Cool, calm nights were the best bet for good reception.
Whilst camping out with mates ( listening and recording radio ) if LUXY was too faint, inevitably, either RNI ( RADIO NORTHSEA INTERNATIONAL ) or ATLANTIS could be picked up clearly. It was as if they were on a rota system for good reception !! These 2 Pirate stations were excellent in the early 70s. RNI tended to play a good mix of Top 40 singles and Album tracks. ATLANTIS was more of a TOP 40 Singles station. 2 under rated stations that were rarely heard.
Got to say though, LUXY was the station to listen to, if reception was reasonable.

You might want to have a look at this site run by Alan Bailey, a former work colleague of mine. There isn't much he doesn't know about Radio Luxembourg in that period and more than likely engineered some of those Luxy sessions. lol Tim you must be psychic I interviewed him just prior to your post! He's not aware of any Lux masters surviving either. Everything that has been released to date of various artists appears to be off-air recordings.
Alan is a most personable guy - as he said to me 'Had i known i was making history at the time i would have recorded everything!'

I'm glad you got to meet up with Al. He's a very interesting bloke. He worked on the Python albums too. Shame that it's just off-airs of Luxy that exist, but 'owt's better than nowt as they say ;-)

Yea i was driving him potty about questions on the Lux tape formats and what happened to the masters. Of course he doesnt know. I find it hard to believe that noone took the opportunity either here in London or Luxembourg not to squirrel away some of this material before it all went into their bulk eraser. Apparantly this machine could wipe a spool clean for reuse in just 10 seconds. Oh the agony!!!
