Not many people know this but before the doctor who episodes were taken away to be destroyed they were held overnight in the back of a van to free up space.
I Know his because my grandfather worked for the BBC as a guard and he had told me he witnessed the loading of the films into the van.
but he also saw one of the other guards acting shifty around the van, and apparently he had asked could he have some stuff from the BBC for his "charity work" but was declined and then 3 months later he was fired for stealing from the BBC so it could be possible that some of them were taken and weren't destroyed after all.
Before people out there think i am fibbing My Granddad gave me rough dates so i checked them on-line and these were the days when the tapes were supposedly destroyed
ADDED 7th April
I For got to say we have recovered a few things from his attic from the bbc like his uniform, all the memos he recieved, about three or four empty and unlabled film cans but my favourate thing was he had a not the best copy of un unearthly child on film in the attic too

afaik there isnt much in the way of documentation about what people were actually hired to dispose of episodes for the BBC. Someone more in the know feel free to set me straight on this if im wrong. There have always been lots of stories about people taking things home with them that they were supposed to junk, it did undoubtedly happen imo (DMP2 for example) but contacting those people, if they are still alive even, and then tracing the subsequent movements of 16 and 35 mm film prints over 30 or so years is not an easy task. Its an interesting story you have though. Pity you havent got a contact numbers for the relevant chaps involved Happy episode hunting!

There is also a story on the DW Gateway about a chap who worked for a skip company who tells how they took away (IIRC) two skip fulls of film a day over a two week period in the early 70s.

I remember reading that as well. Who knows, maybe something will turn up in someones shed or loft someday that never made it to the skip. Its pure speculation really, but its as good a thing to hope for as anything else really........... Imagine if season 5 turned up in some old codgers shed who used to be a skip guy. I think a few people would have fits The happy kind of fit that is

I think any films that were liberated from skips have allready turned up - for instance the 60's episodes that were found at car boots and in private collectors hands probably originated from skips and out the back of peoples vans
I'm hoping for more though!

So, with your very first post you find out that your grandfather worked as a guard for the BBC and then, all of a sudden, within a couple of days you find a copy of An Unearthly Child in his loft?
Pardon me for suggesting that this sounds like it stinks more than a three-week old halibut!
Post some photographs of your "finds" - especially the memos and the episode itself and you might find yourself taken a bit more seriously.
Until then, I don't believe a word of it!

Gary, when was that photo taken? Is the Slade film something that was rescued from a skip?
