As a matter of interest, I remember a letter or an article in a very old issue of either DWW or DWM (and I'm talking Davison era issue) where there was discussion about tv signals being carried out into space and the transmissions being picked up by some distant civilisation.
I don't think the European Space Agency are likely to invest in a faster-than-light ship just so we can get "marco polo" back tho, more's the pity!
Seasons greetings one and all!

Yep i remember the issue well, the prob would be the attenuation of the signal. after a few miles it would be pretty much usless. Its a nice Sci-Fi ish story though...

I’m actually An electronics Engineer ( yes Whodoesn’t give a damM for how I spell, I let you guys post corrections for me !!) With Certificates in the Radio and Signal Trade here down under. I’m only 33 but spent the best part of 25 years reading 70 years worth of every back issue of "electronics Australia" which used to be "radio and Hobbies" and tons of "recording" type mags from the 40's to the 70's. That plus I’ve spent more time tinkering around with vintage , Radio, open reel vtr units, broadcasting equipment, all manner of magnetic recording devices, Disc recording devices, etc etc I could go on all day. I’ve invented serval patented methods for extracting audio from Disc (acetates, home recording blanks, Broadcast Transcription discs) which sound better than most Studio remastered CD's. And I’m a Broadcaster of Swing, and big band, music which I take from my collection of broadcast acetates and 78's. Plus I did Tech work at 2 radio stations. Built and designed 70 Digital Projection units for Digital Cinema in australia. Buitlt Australias 1st True Digital Cinema for Dendy.
So there we are that’s just a fraction of what ive done in the last few years, so when I have an opinion on something it pays to listen. My experirance doesn’t come from any wikpedia. But from doing and reading, and lots of elderly friends retired from the broadcasting, recording industry
The reson i don't post here correcting every ones misguided comments on home recording gear is that it would take most of my day to comment on stuff here !!!.
so there we go.. yes and im also full of hot air!!! ( nurse the screens!!!)

Drawing on your expertise, do you know how long 1960s domestic video recordings can survive if the tapes are stored in reasonable conditions?

You only have to consider some of the BBC-produced Shibaden recordings. Some have survived remarkably well but others, right up to the late 1970s are in a pretty appalling state as far as playback is concerned.
It's pretty much a lottery!

The Shibaden recordings, though hardly high definition, were at least professionally produced. I hold out little hope of any usable domestic recordings of 60s shows being located. I know that a recording of 'Space Pirates' 2 was found, but given its redundant status, did anyone discover if it could still be played?
