'The Lion' aside, New Zealand TV were very efficient at following the BBC's directives. Shame. And don't forget The Time Meddler and The War Machines, both of which were returned, after having come via NZ. Was it the NZ or Australian TV censor who took the scissors to these prints before they were sent to Nigeria?

Usually, (and I stress the word "usually") by the time NZBC received prints bicycled from Australia (Sydney, I believe?) there was little left of offence to edit out...

And don't forget The Time Meddler and The War Machines, both of which were returned, after having come via NZ. Was it the NZ or Australian TV censor who took the scissors to these prints before they were sent to Nigeria? It was the NZ censors who cut the extant copies of The War Machines and The Time Meddler. (The upcoming Time Meddler DVD has a 'special feature' about the "Missing 14 Seconds"!) The Australian censors cut the ABC prints of the serial - and it was the cut footage from these that was found. The NZ censors cut the NZ prints, some of which were the very same scenes that had offended the Aussie censors. The BBC video release of War Machines therefore is a mishmash of the cut and uncut prints, with the Aussie cut footage inserted into the gaps cut into NZ/Nigerian film prints!
