Ive heard that most if not all of the Blue Peters from 1962 onwards (the arrival of Biddy Baxter?) survive.
If so does anyone know for sure if Patrick Troughton's 1967 appearance to judge the monster making competition, where he appeared in character, still survives?
I sadly doubt it as I am sure by now we would have seen a clip of it on a documentary or a DVD extra.
If it does it would be an appropriate extra for a future Krotons DVD as for years many apparently believed the Krotons were the result of the competition. I am sure I read this legendary error in a Peter Haining book in the early 80's!
Can anyone shed any light?

The edition where the results of the monster competition were announced does survive, but Patrick Troughton did not appear in it. There is a publicity photograph of Troughton with some home-made looking monsters, I can't remember whether this was the BP monsters or some actual BBC ones!
From around 1967 all editions of Blue Peter do exist on one format or another, but there are plenty of gaps between 1963 and mid 1967 (though far fewer by 1966-7). No complete editions survive before 1963, apart from a special untransmitted audition programme recorded in 1962 (featuring Valerie Singleton and Anita Ward, among others), and in fact no film inserts exist from before that date (well, there's about a second of a 1959 edition on the end of a recording of a General Election results programme...). Most if not all editions between October 1963 and 1967 have at least their film inserts existing though.

off subject a little but you seem very knowledgable on the subject, do you know what musical guest appearances survive from Blue Peter?

I have the audio from a Patrick Troughton "Meet and Greet" that happened in 1985 in Concord, New Hampshire. It runs about an hour (give or take). It's more like a convention thing.
At the time, most of the fans in the room had only seen the three multi-Doctor episodes (Three Doctors, Five Doctors & Two Doctors). So most of us did not know what to ask him really. So as for any new secrets being exposed, there are none.
In those days I was a radio broadcast reporter and I was able to place a microphone in front of him. It's hard to hear the questions from the audience but you can hear his responses loud and clear. I would post a sample if there was a way to do so (unless I use one of the free file storage websites but some people are leary about those). I e-mailed excerpts of the recording to the Gallifreyan Embassy website but I don't know if they ever even got it.
I KNOW this is not a missing episode but do you think there would be any interest in something like this? For what I am not sure. And also since I'm a newbie, you might be a bit leary of me. It is unique in that I was the only broadcast reporter covering the event and it must be the only recording that exists. I expect he was saying much of the same thing at other 1985 US conventions he attended.

JeffL -- Was that the show that was sponsored by New Hampshire Public Television? I helped run one with Patrick Troughton back around '85 or thereabouts...
You probably do have the only copy of that audio -- you might try contacting the Doctor Who restoration team (info@restoration-team.co.uk) -- they may want a copy.

Yes StevenS, it was that event. New Hampshire Public Television sponsored it and it was held at the now bulldozed Highway Hotel in Concord, New Hampshire. I doubled checked the date - it was either March 15 or March 22, 1986. It was just before his birthday because someone wishes him a happy birthday during the event. I also took 6 or 7 pictures (I don't have a scanner but I can get access to one). Troughton had a full beard at that point. He was sitting in a single chair in front of the audience and my microphone and stand with a mic-flag that says "WCFR" is in every shot. In fact, another news photographer had to temporarily move it out of the way to get a clear shot. WCFR was the radio station I worked for in Springfield, Vermont at the time. Here is a link to zShare, a file sharing website, where you can hear about a two minute sample of Troughton commenting on watching his old episodes: patrick troughton41.mp3 - 3.01MBI think it will only come up in your left channel/speaker. I was using a Marantz mono cassette deck, which was a standard for broadcasting in those days.

Yep - that was the show... It was one of the last ones he did - he died a year later at a convention in Georgia. I remember being at another convention in New York that weekend with Colin Baker, and IIRC he announced it during his talk.

That would be great to hear, I'm a big pat troughton fan and something like this would be a fantastic extra on one of his future (yet sadly few) DVD releases (may be the war games.)

Troughton is my favorite doctor, and I greatly enjoyed hearing this audio segment. Would love to hear the entire thing if you ever wanted to post it, am sure many others would love to hear it as well. I was thinking it might be a good extra for a BBC Audio CD release or DVD extra. Anyway, many thanks for posting, I would hope that the chaps at The Restoration Team would want a copy, definitely get in touch with them, should help you, nice chaps.
Cheers, Lance.

OK, I appreciate the kind words from posters. Here is a link to the zShare website with the ten minute long collection of excerpts that I sent to gallifreyanembassy.com (but never heard back). At least this way some folks will be able to enjoy some of it. These are excerpted from various sections of the 50-55 minute event and I don't believe they are necessarily in order of how he originally stated the responses. When I was editing it into a cohesive, short presentation, I was trying to find what I thought were the more interesting sections. I am not trying to hoard anything. I just haven't gotten around to ripping the whole thing into my computer. So here is the link: patrick troughton excerpts.mp3 - 7.40MB
