This is just a idea to see how large the market is in the fandom area for these two television gems of the past. A unreleased sci-fi series of old, and a unreleased documentary with the creator of Doctor who ( Which could contain some clips from missing 1966 who episodes ). Lets just see shall we.

Sorry, is this 16mm documentary something that's turned up recently and perhaps needs some action to be preserved? If it's an interview with Sydney Newman and "could contain some clips from missing 1966 who episodes" surely it's A) prime material as a BBC DVD-release extra; and B) potentially rather important! I mean – does it have previously unseen/known clips or not? Why don't we know? Where is it and are the people who need to know aware of it? I am confused!

Yeah, we had this in another thread in some depth. Opinions seem to be somewhat divided over it. I am of the opinion that this needs looking into at the very least.

Cheers, gh. I agree. It might have various clips in it from the very beginnings of the programme, if it was made at a time when stories now missing were available to its producers. Marco Polo, anyone?! I hope Steve Roberts et al. are on the case...

I dont believe anyone is much on the case as I recall from the thread previously; I seem to recall the BBc werent interested. I might be remembering wrongly, but there was a moderately heated debate on the matter.

It does sound quite hopefull it would be interesting if there were some clips from missing episodes in the documentary.

Right, well, where is it if it's not at the Beeb and why would the RT not be interested in grabbing it for a future DVD-release extras package, even if there are NO clips in it which would make its recovery invaluable anyway? (Apologies for those who were involved in this previous heated debate and have already been over this.) Is there anything any of us can do to aid the situation?

Write to the BBC and state your views. Not sure who best to aim that letter at, but its an idea

Apparently. IIRC, the footage in question is the property of CBC (Canada) and as such the BBC have no legal claim of ownership. Ergo: their hands are tied - regardless how many out there may wish them to get involved for their benefit.

Hello All,
I have just returned home from a week long vacation camping, fun. But anyway I wanted to let you know that I am in contact with a prominent University official who is going to secure a research copy of the documentary for me to view in relation to my search for missing material. I have to give him an e-mail or call tomorow and see how it is progressing. However, I should soon be able to tell the world if any clips exist there. So keep your fingers crossed.
Lance.

I think as has been mentioned last time that the clip is quite secure and documented within the Canadian Film archives so there is no likelihood of it being lost. Also I don't think the BBC have a claim on this anyway, I doubt they are going to shell out money just to hear Sidney Newman say the words 'Doctor Who' a couple of times in the course of a short interview on his career.

Regardless, it is worth investigating with an open mind as to what may or may not be there.

In response to Cliveuk latest posting. It was also stated on the Canadian archive listing for the documentary that the film leader reads " BBC Television ". However the film can states it as CBC property. I looked into this a little bit deeper, and found some interresting results. This also related to the Sydney Newman Daughters thread. This specific film was part of a collection of paper materials, and was the only film related deposit to the Canadian archives by the daughter of Sydney Newman. I am guessing that the BBC gave Newman a copy of the documentary about him, and later after his passing his daughter gave the film and some other letters that Newman posessed to the Canadian Archives. It is unlikely that his family retains any more film from Newman's past, but not impossible. But unlikely none the less.
Lance.
