I was looking at Gallifreyone.com and an interesting article caught my eye. "Nathan-Turner: Donor in Focus People-August 18, 2005 The 'considerable archive' of items belonging to John Nathan-Turner, the final producer of the 'classic' Doctor Who series who oversaw seasons 18 through 26, and who passed away in 2002, has been acquired by the British Film Institute's National Library, who has named him a "Donor in Focus". The archive is part of the BFI National Library's special collections; access is restricted to those who already have BFI Library annual library membership, for which there is a fee, and have to be consulted in the BFI study room. We're not sure exactly what this archive entails, but we imagine Doctor Who scholars are currently looking into it. (Thanks to Neil Marsh, Matthew Kilburn)." Is it possible that he possessed episodes on film ? Could this be of use in the episode push by Paul and Ian ? Any thoughts or info would be appreciated.
Thanks, Lance.

The BFI Special Collections really only concerns themselves with documentation - paperwork, scripts, letters, photos - not cans of film. The Restoration Team also knows Gary Downie fairly well (who would have made this donation to the BFI), so no doubt he would have already made them aware if John had any episodes on film.

Do you honestly think that John Nathan-Turner could have owned missing episodes and not known their value?

What I meant in that, is maybe he was holding on to some material for a rainy day. Ian Levine did the same thing concerning prints of The Time Meddler.

No - Ian was holding on to prints in the eighties because they belonged to someone else at the time. He (quite rightly) felt he could not return, give away, sell or otherwise part with something that was not legally his property. That's why he arranged for their eventual return in consultation with the owner and the BBC.

Oh, thanks for clearing this matter up. Well could the paperwork be of use to Paul or Ian ?

Oh, thanks for clearing this matter up. Well could the paperwork be of use to Paul or Ian ? Lance. Probably not. The only forseeable thing that might interest anyone on this board would involve the use of the Hartnell and Troughton clips in "Earthshock" and "Resurrection of the Daleks."

Out of interest, is it possible that Nathan-Turner might have owned footage from his era on the series that doesn't exist in the archives, such as studio footage, deleted scenes or original edits of episodes?

I doubt there is studio footage in JNT's private collection. At best there might be some on-set off-camera video or film like there was for "The Abominable Snowman" or "Evil of The Daleks."

Do you honestly think that John Nathan-Turner could have owned missing episodes and not known their value? I agree. This isn't just any normal guy we're talking about here!

While I feel that JNT took the show into a direction that I now feel was way too dark, I do believe he had true affection and appreciation for the program. It obviously shows in the 20th season, especially with "The Five Doctors." It also shows in his reintroduction of The Master, and the use of Gallifrey throughout his tenure.

Was anything of interest found in John Nathan-Turner's archive? I don't imagine he was hoarding all six episodes of The Power of the Daleks or anything like that, but I gather what was previously (to me, at least) the legendary Kamelion deleted scene from The Awakening was discovered. Anything else...? I can't find any information online anywhere.

From what DWM reported at the time there were some behind the scenes footage, outakes, rough edits ect, often on VHS.
