Some around the fan circuit are only 6.50Mb which is a tad low. That'll be 32kbps. It's a great shame a lot of radio shows are at that qualiy. It was a hard slog uploading large files in the days of slow modems so they had their reasons but I bet they didn't have the common sense to keep a good copy for themself which they could triumphantly unveil a decade or more later when upload speeds had dramatically improved. Many of the 32kbps files you'll find are unlistenable. And Re: the comment on the previous page "The file needs some work on it. I have this and am happy for someone here to work on it if they wish." Again if it's 32kbps there's probably very little that can be done with it.

Again if it's 32kbps there's probably very little that can be done with it. There used to be a bloke called Ade Gregg on the archive tv/radio circuit who could do miraculous things with messed up files, but I Doubt even he could do anything with a file at 32kbps

It was a hard slog uploading large files in the days of slow modems so they had their reasons but I bet they didn't have the common sense to keep a good copy for themself which they could triumphantly unveil a decade or more later when upload speeds had dramatically improved. Particularly true of things like 'Ace of Wands', where there are audio recordings, but they only seem to have been retained as compressed mp3s or at very low bitrate* - and nowadays audioheads could make the originals (no matter how murky) listenable. Stuart * I would be delighted if someone proves me wrong and points out that an uncompressed wav of 'Seven Serpents, Sulphur and Salt', say, is currently doing the rounds

I wonder if this ever got digitised to DVD. I looked around in the BFI shop and they don't have much from SA. But the SA version of MFTM ran to 900+ eps. so I would have thought that there might be a demand for the film on DVD. Would certainly buy it!! But maybe the film doesn't exist in the archives ...

"Miss Chatterly's Lover" S06E08 is here is anyone wants to have a go at it. www.mediafire.com/folder/ojebhagahisk8/MFTMThe MP3 is the one circulating amongst TMFTM fans. The WAV file is from an attempt by the guys at the Ass'n for Recorded Sound Discussion List at [ARSCLIST@LISTSERV.LOC.GOV] I've heard that mp3 copy before. I recall someone asking before (not necessarily on this forum, I can't remember where) about the quality, and then taking a listen and not being able to do anything with it. One problem is that the file is such a low bitrate* so you get horrible sounds introduced which wouldn't be present on a higher bitrate recording. I can see you have the original too fast mp3 and a speed corrected version, but whoever speed corrected it saved it back at a low bitrate again so some audio information has been lost compared to the fast version. The wav version is a slight improvement except I don't think it needs slowing down any more, 35 minutes is too slow surely? The 2nd mp3 at a tad under 30 minutes seems a better speed, or was the show known to overrun at times? A fresh transfer from the tape would be an improvement, but the improvement may be minuscule and probably not worth tracking down a tape. In any case if you tracked down a tape it's sod's law that it'd be several generations worse and have more hiss and there'd be no improvement. There's a lost Goon Show that's also low bitrate and considerably worse than this one! *A legacy of slow modems and expensive webspace that has done a huge amount of damage to online OTR collections.

The tape is long gone I am afraid. It was never in circulation!!
Meanwhile the only Goon Show episode I have is Childe Harold. I would expect this is not lost!!!

Yeah I know a lot of people threw away their tapes after making all those horrible little 16kbps & 32kbps files. Childe Harold is a series 9 episode. Everything exists from series 5 onwards (with the exception of a 15 minute special "The Missing Christmas Parcel")... although some of those may only exist as off-airs or shortened transcription versions but I don't have that information. It's the first 4 series that are very patchy to nonexistent.

Thanks for this - hokey, but enjoyable series.
Many of the circulating Saturday Night Theatres were only available as 32k/64k copies, but I recently downloaded a good chunk in 128k (and above) that appear to be the same recordings, but with differing tops and tails. There's always hope...

There is a whole distro of Saturday Night Theatres doing the rounds. See en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saturday_Night_Theatre Apparently there are (were) too many to be permanently available. Keep a regular check-up with any personal contacts that you have or know about. Meanwhile there is a lot of activity in the US to restore episodes of Lux Radio Theatre - see en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lux_Radio_Theater Check out the archives of the Yahoo Group [OldTimeRadioResearchersGroup] Also check out the OTR groups on Facebook.

Thanks a lot for posting this, Stephen. I can even understand some of it! Don't think it'll qualify for a 4 Extra broadcast.
