Hello Again to all, I have had this specific performance clip of the Move playing "California Man" on 2g's and the Pop People, dated 1972. Is a great performance, love the TOTP version as well also. The Move has been one of my favorite bands for a long while. I was always curious where this clip originated from ? Whether it is remotely rare or not ? etc. Any info or assistance on this subject would be much appreciated as always. Thank you in advance, and enjoy the show ! www.youtube.com/watch?v=mQEPYfXWWnILance.

Yes '2Gs and the pop people' was a short lived summer series made by LWT and probably produced by Mike Mansfield? Rather interestingly on this same show the Electric Light Orchestra are singing their Overture song .Interesting because as you may know the ELO is more or less the same band as 'the Move'.? But as California Man turned out to be 'the Move's' swan song, then maybe it was a way of introducing 'the ELO'? as for its rarity then its prsumably safe in the Granada archive easily accesable by those in the know?

Yes i agree that this is a great clip which resides in the LWT/ITV archive. It was directed by Bruce Gowers and Produced by Dougie Squires. This particular show featured: The Move - California Man Labi Siffre - It Must Be Love +1 Electric Light Orchestra - 10538 Overture Tony Brandon.

It does sound very good. Particularly as the BBC appearances that exist of Labi Siffre don't feature him doing the hit.
There is a programme on him in the series SOUNDING OUT though that may.
I recall his appearance for the song SMILE FOR ME on 'EV'; Kenny Everetts late lamented and lost 70 - 71 pop show for LWT. Around December 1970; Siffre in a flowery silk shirt and neck cravat. (Later found out these were called 'Paisley' shirts).
The 'EV' studio had as far as I recall quite minimalist dressing; like 'Whistle Test' six months later or so.
Now CALIFORNIA MAN. The clip I hope will turn up; as it's ingrained so well in my mind is the (missing) second of the Xmas 1972 TOTP editions.
I think ELO previwed ROLL OVER BEETHOVEN. All I recall was Jeff Lynne had the same Teddy Boy jacket as in the Move clip, and a circular sticker on his guitar saying 'II'm off to see the WIZZARD'. Roy Wood had the same sticker on his guitar appearing with Wizzard.
In the performance I recall, the double bassist rolls around under the bass on the floor at the end. I think this happens on the existing BBC (July 72) clip. At the end they wheeled on one of those 'ceiling high' ILEA TV sets which I recall they smashed up. Presumably no one was pre warned about it or they replaced the glass with sugar glass. I recall two of the band wrestling it from its stand, doing a tug of war with it then hitting it with mallets and kicking it (pre punk!)
In the ELO performance; Jeff Lynne had a peaked 'Captain' style hat. In the existing performance he resmbles Edgar Allen Poe in some kind of Glitter wig. My assumption was it was a spoof of Roy Wood. The ton of the band had radically altered to mainstream for their following hit 'Showdown' when Lynne was no longer under the influence of Wood.

Hi There
It does exist as I have a copy somewhere in my collection, if I remember correctly this was a short lived vehicle for a dance troupe called 2nd generation & each episode was presented by a different dj, this one did indeed feature Tony Brandon & as stated 2 great performances from the move/elo & Labi Siffre. I know that there is at least one other episode that still exists as I have seen it on certain download sites

Doesn't the whole series of 2Gs exist though? I think my Kal guide says so (I don't have it to hand to check).
