Yes, a rather sad pathetic state of affairs and what happens when narrow-minded producers refuse to listen to the publics' gripes.

This is what we get instead "The BBC has commissioned six Top Of The Pops 2 specials, including one dedicated to The Police. The other five shows, which will last between an hour and an hour and a half, will be themed around the Eurovision song contest, summer hits, Halloween chart successes, country music and Christmas hits."

What are the details on the ITV show? I was wondering the exact same thing! It is in the planning stage at the moment but will end up being better than anything the BBC has ever done, and that's because it's being put together by somebody who knows what to do and what people want to see, (NOT what the BBC want to show you) and using researchers who know their job, not someone the BBC has dragged out of media class either. No stupid captions a "live" presenter, class footage, footage that has never been seen since first tx, in fact everything that TOTP2 was NOT.

If the footage is cropped to widescreen though (which, sadly, seems to be in vogue with TV producers), then that IMO undos any good there could possibly be. I'm not going to watch something with 25% of the original picture lopped off. At least TOTP2 maintained the original 4:3 ratio (and even if it didn't- why not pillarbox? Just ignore the minority of viewers who moan about the black bars).

If ITV can get these clips out of the archive, and back in the homes and TV sets of the masses, than I am way all for it. Does the size really matter that much when you consider, how else are we going to be able to see these items ? James2001, you should really consider waiting till the show airs before making assumptions, just an thought. I do not mean to sound rude or anything. I just think that a show, song, album, whatever the case may be should be given a full listen before passing sentence. I would think that they would not air the timecode box, however it would look more archivish if the timecode was kept in place. On the pther hand it might end up annoying a lot of people. Anyway, I look forward to seeing the ITV series, can't wait !

Eh? Have you read my post wrong or something? I was saying that I hope they don't crop 4:3 footage to 16:9, because it looks awful and totally ruins the footage, I never said anything about the quality of the music, or anything about timecodes.
These shows are usually the only chance we ever get of seeing such footage- yet 25% of the original 4:3 image is sacrificed because they want to zoom it up to 16:9. In my opinion, if you can't do it right- don't do it at all.

Sorry James,
I was a little vague on your last posting, sorry for the confusion, I apologise. In that case, I agree with you as well.

It's a pity that TOTP2 finished (The BBC site says something like "the current season has finished, look back for possible revivals, cheers") I saw the Eurovision one on 5th May 2007. It was good as full performances were shown. I think 'The Police' special was on 27th Aug 2007 (missed it). Does anyone know if the 'summer hits' one scheduled for July was actually on, or if 'Halloween Chart Successes' (scheduled for October), 'Country Music' (November) and Christmas hits (December) are still planned? I hope they are, thanks.

As far as I'm aware the 3 other specials are still planned, but you will not be suprised to learn all the usual & predictable footage will be wheeled out AGAIN ie: Monster mash stand by your man (xmas 75 with Tammy & the Christmas trees) & the usual Merry Xmas everybody, NO THANKS MR BBC I'll give the rest a miss. They will never learn
