I was intending to put TOTP in the Missing Epsiode List. Can anyone confirm if this data of Mark's is still correct?

Various promo films still exist mostly from 72.
Cheers

There was no TOTP shown on 5/4/84. The editions from 9/9/82 and 9/8/84 are widely thought to be missing from the BBC archives, especially as no performances from either show have ever been repeated. For instance, FGTH did a completely new performance of 'Two Tribes' on the 9/8/84 edition (with Holly Johnson roaming the studo floor like a news reporter), but it has never been reshown. The other 5 performances of 'Two Tribes' have been constantly shown on TOTP2 and other programmes

9/9/82 and 9/8/84 do exist, whatever is 'widely thought'!
Not every edition after 23/9/76 does exist however - the programmes are logged on Infax but there are no holdings for the following: 11/11/76 18/11/76 02/12/76 16/12/76 10/02/77 03/03/77 31/03/77 04/08/77 08/09/77
Note that due to a strike, the edition scheduled for 12/01/78 was replaced by a repeat of the edition from 13/01/77, and (possibly for a similar reason) the edition on 16/08/79 was replaced by a repeat of 02/08/79. On 5/4/84 it wasn't just a case of no TOTP, there were no programmes at all on BBC1, and a different schedule on BBC2, due to industrial action.
The 'incorrect' Christmas 1965 inserts are Intertel recorded inserts of The Beatles performing "We Can Work It Out" and "Day Tripper" which do seem to have been first transmitted by the BBC on 25/12/65 - if anyone has any evidence to the contrary I'd be interested to know it! There is another version of "We Can Work It Out" which was first shown 02/12/65, and is thus logged as the only holdings for "Top of the Pops" on that day. Other inserts include Peter Paul and Mary performing "Early Morning Rain", recorded along with their "Tonight in Person" shows in 1965, and shown 30/9/65.

The BBC's copies are broadcast standard - someone was probably saving money by using the VHS viewing copy...

Re 1984, you would've thought the different schedule would've been on 1 not 2 !

The PasB lists the 2/12/65 edition of TOTP as the first screening of the Intertel videos for both Day Tripper and We Can Work It Out, Andrew. Although it doesn't specify which versions (there are three different ones for each song). It's possible one version of each was first transmitted on each of those dates (2/12 and 25/12) - is it possible to say which were on which date though? Maybe the holdings for those dates merely double up the same clips though? Any reason why these clips (which are non-BBC) were retained when actual TOTP originated performances weren't? Can you also confirm if the Shadows clip of "Don't It Make My Baby Blue" still exists on VT, Andrew? It's something that people here have noted was used as a clip some years ago but seems to have gone off the map in recent times. I expect this is one people would like to know the answer to.

Other various b&w bits and pieces exist (hoping to date these - incorrectly labelled as 65 xmas inserts) Various promo films still exist mostly from 72. Cheers Stuart A few amendments to the list up to 1973 or thereabouts, Stuart: The 28/9/68 soundtrack seems not to exist any more. I asked about this myself and it seems the Infax entry is there from a point years ago when it obviously was in the archives. The 6/6/68 edition is with mute links (i.e. you can see Saville and Davy Jones talking but there is no sound, as opposed to early '70s editions with mute links where you didn't see the DJ as he voiced the link over opening shots of the act). 27/2/69: This is partly mute links (as with 6/6/68). The edition also has very poor sound quality for the performances in the first part of the show which has sound on the links; from the point where the links go mute (about one third of the way through), the sound improves - presumably it wasn't patched through correctly from the start. 29/1/70, 5/2/70 and 26/2/70: They are b/w trs of colour vt editions. The 1970 colour compilation consists of nine performances from the editions of 29/1/70, 4/6/70, 18/6/70, 9/7/70, 7/1/71 and 15/7/71 (some have their DJ intros). The TOTP promo films (all still untransferred from film) date from January 1970 to around 1974 - there are a lot of these and at least several for most calendar months during this period. 14/1/71: This is, I think, just a regular edition with mute links (i.e. not a studio reel). 30/4/71: The actual tx date is 29/4/71 (rather than 30th). 23/12/71: This is a reel of 2 songs dubbed for ZDF and not either a recording or transmission date (the date bears no relation to a TOTP edition and probably refers to the date the tape was dubbed). 16/11/72: This edition is b/w vt (of a colour vt edition). There are a few more odds and ends too (e.g. the Cliff Richard "Visions" promo film from '66, which is mute, although could be re-dubbed) but no hitherto unknown "finds", sadly! There are also various other orphaned clips (several on b/w VT from 1965 and others on t/r from 1964 to 1968 - plus a couple on colour VT from 1969). I could provide dates / details to most if you want, Stuart (some are impossible to date though as the songs in question featured in several TOTP editions and so there is no way of telling categorically which of the performances the clip is of). Also worth mentioning is the fact that the 15/2/68 edition also contains approximately a 30 second break (seemingly where the t/r changed reels and there was no overlap), which occurs at the very end of Legend Of Xanadu / beginning of Mighty Quinn. Can Andrew Martin add any more to this?

Any idea which clips are affected by dodgy sound? ISTR when Sandie Shaw's 'Monsieur Dupont' was shown on an early TOTP 2, the sound was perfect, but when it was shown again a few years later, the sound for the early part of the clip was s**t, but improved roughly halfway through, which I then suspected that the earlier showing had been redubbed, but the later showing was using the original soundtrack, which was rubbish/improved as above! ISTR reading somewhere that they redubbed soundtracks for TOTP 2. Is that correct?

The first 10 minutes or so has very poor sound (titles / chart rundown, Cliff Richard "Good Times", Sandie Shaw "Monsieur Dupont") but with sound on the DJ links. The rest of the performances are fine from there on sound-wise but the links are mute. I also have those two different TOTP2 recordings myself of Monsieur Dupont; the first with good sound (probably re-dubbed) and a later repeat of the same performance bizarrely with poor sound (as on the original TOTP edition it comes from) for half the song, switching to good sound later on in!

The first 10 minutes or so has very poor sound (titles / chart rundown, Cliff Richard "Good Times", Sandie Shaw "Monsieur Dupont") but with sound on the DJ links. The rest of the performances are fine from there on sound-wise but the links are mute. Like the 6/6/68 edition and a few of the 70s VT copies, this was an attempt to make a music only recording free from applause and presenter speech so that the music performance was "clean". I believe the idea being that it was easier to re-use the material if needed in a later show which would have a new intro applied, although why these ended up as film recordings and not VT for re-use I don't know. In the case of 27/2/69 the feed for the first few minutes was the reverse of this by accident. All you get music wise is some very low-level breakthrough, which if boosted sounds very thin, noisy and crackly. Only half way through Sandie Shaw's performance is the feed re-plugged as originally intended, hence the sudden improvement in sound quality and the mute links thereafter. At the least the mistake meant we have some examples of Stuart Henry's presentation from his heyday.
