Over the last couple of years, I've read in sources like 'record collector' of a few appearences David Bowie apparently made in Europe in the 60s. I was also unaware of a number of British TV appearences highlighted earlier in the publication.
Obviously with European footage theres a high chance of survival; but I also thought it might be a good idea for correspondents to send in listings of all the appearences they know of? Obviously collectors aren't going to look for material they didn't know was transmitted, so it would provide a good starting point.
To start: The European appearences quoted were (I think): - One appearence 1967 (German or french TV):
Love you till Tuesday
2nd appearence (French TV ?) 1967 - Love you till Tuesday; Please Mr Gravedigger.
1968 - (Dutch TV ?) Karma man (?).
To add, the lesser known Bowie appearences -
(details need amendment):
ITV (David Bowie and the Lower third) Jan 1966 - Can't help thinking about me.
ITV - 1966 / 67 : Rubber band (?) (solo)
3 ITV performances (items) believed in all.
Theatre 625 (BBC 2): One off play (title unknown). Play featured Bowie and I think Hermione - ?, Bowies later girlfriend immortalised in 'Letter to hermione' 1969 track.
Better known TV appearences -
Tonight (BBC) 1964 'the society for long haired men'.
Gadzooks its all happening! (BBC 2) 1965. (Mannish boys).
Top of the Pops (BBC) 1968 / 69 - 'promo' original 'Space oddity' (Decca single version). This film was gleaned from
'Love you till Tuesday' a Bowie promotional short apparently initiated by Manager kenneth Pitt to try and finally get Bowie on the pop hit 'map'.
Love you till Tuesday (film) Described above - Further TV use included the mime piece 'the mask'. I seem to recall this being shown on Thames' ' Today ' magazine show around 1970, then again at his height in 1973. 'Space oddity' promo shown again on TOTP during re release 1975 ?
Dutch TV 1969 - Space Oddity.
Top of the pops 1969 (Sep ?) - Stills indicate Bowie sported the same permed hair do as on the Dutch clip, with an acoustic guitar, but sitting on a high stool.
Looking glass murders (STV) 1970 -
A surprising item I was unaware of till seeing the extra on 'Love you till Tuesday' DVD. A colour ' T- R ' of VT original. Amazed it existed by STVs standards. Bowie reworks some Deram tracks and the Peel session cut 'London bye ta ta'. still has the 'permed' hair do, bit more frizzy.
Old grey whistle test (BBC) 1972 - (transmissed): Five years, Queen Bitch. (session tape untransmitted segments: Queen Bitch duff take (false start), Oh you pretty things.
Top of the pops (BBC) 1972 - Starman (studio)
Top of the pops (BBC) 1972 - John I'm only dancing (Mick Rock promo)
Top of the pops (BBC) 1973 - Jean genie (Mick Rock promo), (Pans people - member dressed as glam style alien), (studio with band).
Top of the pops (BBC) 1973 - Drive in Saturday (studio)
Russel Harty plus (LWT) 1973 - Drive in Saturday, interview, My death.
Top of the pops (BBC) 1973 - Life on mars (Mick Rock promo), (TOTP film featuring Hiroshima mushroom cloud and Apollo take off footage)
Top of the pops (BBC) 1973 - Space oddity (Mick Rock promo - single release of RCA L.P. version)
Nationwide (BBC) 1973 - film profile
Cracked actor (BBC) 1974 - documentary.
Top of the pops (BBC) 1974 - Man who sold the world (Lulu).
studio clip, only one of the song featuring Bowie, playing sax in white panama hat and suit.
Additional notes: Peter Noone guested on 'David Nixon show' ITV 1971. Theres a good chance the performance may have been 'Oh you pretty thing'; the prototype which Bowie redid with altered title / arrangement / lyrics but Noone had a hit with.
promos exist for the Bowie penned 'All the young dudes' (Mott the hoople) and 'only after dark' (Mick Ronson). 'Oscar' (believed to be Paul Nicholas) appeared singing a Bowie song 'over the wall' on 'Crackerjack' 1967.
Any additions and corrections appreciated.
