while watching the movie 'Inside the Playboy Mansion' last night (ok, ok, it's part of my job!), I was struck by how many musical guests were showing playing in the Playboy Club, in really nice quality too. Some cluips were B&W (Sammy Davis jnr, Ella Fitzgerald) some in colour (Sonny & Cher). All were in virtually prisytine condition, obviously striaght off the original VTs. Do we know what artists Hef has in his quite extensive (by the lookof it) vaults?? (at least he had the foresight to keep the stuff!!)

Wow that's freaky! I was looking at some this afternoon!
I have quite a few on dvd.
The ones I was watching had Three Dog Night, James Brown, Steppen Wolf, Canned Heat.
Old perv Hefner sucks up like mad to the groups, praising their adventurous lyrics, having moved away from Moon/June rhymes.

Saw a few episodes while back, and the artistes I recall are The Grateful Dead, Spirpt and, quite bizarrely, The Cowsills. There's a priceless moment when Hef asks the keyoboard player (who must be all of 12 years old) what she wants to be when she grows up, and she answers, "a Playboy Playmate"!

The black and white clips were from Playboy's Penthouse which aired in the early 60s. I know there are a couple complete episodes in existence on black and white video tape.
The color clips are from Playboy After Dark which aired from 1968 to 1970. There are over 50 episodes. In the mid 1990s they were rebroadcast in their entirety on the Playboy Channel in the United States. An amazing amount of groups performed on Playboy After Dark including:
Iron Butterfly, Steppenwolf, the Byrds, Three Dog Night (several appearances), the Grass Roots, Sir Douglas Quintet, Canned Heat, Joe Cocker, Grand Funk Railroad, Deep Purple, Country Joe and the Fish, Linda Ronstadt, Bill Medley, Billy Preston, Sammy Davis, Jr., the Buddy Miles Express, the Cowsills, Jim Webb, John Hartford, Joan Baez, Sweetwater, Cher, Checkmates LTD, Marvin Gaye, Taj Mahal, James Brown, Lou Rawls, Ike and Tina Turner Revue, Doug Kershaw, Chambers Brothers, Smokey Robinson and the Miracles, R.B. Greeves, B.B. King, Jackie Deshannon, Nillson, the Grateful Dead, Fleetwood Mac and more.
The Playboy After Dark episodes were all well preserved; on the same level as the Ed Sullivan Show. Several of the groups played live.
Hope this info is helpful.

I just recetnly spoke to Playboy about the possibility of using a clip from one of their TV shows on a documentary but was told that the copyright quagmire was so big that selling clips was impossible...

They really screwed up 10 years ago when they rebroadcast the after dark episodes. Their legal department failed to do their homework and get necessary, authorizations, releases, licenses and pay performers. Rather than deal with the aggravation they pulled the shows off tv and they have since just gathered dust in their archives.

The Fleetwood Mac performance has been used in something here as well - I forget what. I'd like to see some more of the music clips from this show myself.
