I was just wondering that as well. There was some discussion about it previously, but I don't think we got any further than a speculative lineup, with memories of Legs & Co dancing to Jean Michel-Jarre "Oxygene IV".
It would be good to have the definitive lineup...

Neil, he left the Equals in 1972 due to illness but stayed on as producer. The singer in '76 was Dave Martin.

Re: TOTP 8.9.77: Neil discovered that Black Gorilla were on it performing 'Gimme Dat Banana'. Others probably would have included Space, Meri Wilson, The Adverts, Rods, Leo Sayer, La Belle Epoque and the Emotions.

So there was a TOTP on the 12/8/76 after all. Next thing is, does it survive in any shape or form?

TOTP tx 8/9/77 ep. no. 702 recorded 7/9/77
DJ - Kid Jensen
Legs and Co (studio) dancing to - ? (see note below) Elvis Presley (disc) - "Way Down" (stills from Rex Features used to accompany record - presumably no other material available?) The Motors (studio) - "Dancing the Night Away" Boomtown Rats (studio) - "Lookin' After No.1" Black Gorilla (studio) - "Gimme Dat Banana" Blue (studio) - "Bring Back the Love" Rosetta Stone (studio) - "Sunshine of Your Love" Space (VT from Pye) - "Magic Fly" (2nd showing) Meri Wilson (VT from Avro TV) - "Telephone Man" (1st showing) The Rods (BBC VT) - "Do Anything You Wanna Do" (repeat, first shown 25/8/77)
(NB this is not the actual running order - documentation used lists live material, then film/VT, then stills, with separate music details)
Also: The Emotions (disc) - "Best of My Love" Jean-Michel Jarre (disc) - "Oxygene" La Belle Epoque (disc) - "Black"
(There are no specific details on the documentation, but presumably one of these is under the chart run-down, another is danced to by Legs & Co, and the third is played under the titles - in the order given?)

Excellent work once again, Andrew! Thanks for that.
So the Motors did perform "Dancing The Night Away" in the studio after all? What a shame that has been wiped as it's a great song and I'm sure the performance would have been good too!

Surprised to see that the Adverts weren't on it though. I'm sure I read somewhere that there were two performances of "Gary Gilmore's Eyes"!

8.9.77 at last! A million thanks to Andrew for finally confirming the line-up. It sounded like a great edition, with some very good songs included (Space, Rods, Rats, Jarre, and Motors). What a pity it no longer exists.
Blue and Rosetta Stone (who?) were impossible to predict as neither charted, but we guessed most of the others correctly.
The Motors' 'Dancing The Night Away' was a pleasant surprise, considering it didn't chart for another two weeks. I would have thought Leo Sayer's 'Thunder In My Heart' might have been in there, but thankfully The Motors were instead!

Thanks for sorting out this long standing query Andrew. A lot of people will be much happier for having the actual lineup at long last!

Andrew, do you also have the details for 9/9/82?
I think you may have posted them a while back but it would be nice to have them in this thread too.
Thanks.

Wasn't Simon Cowell dressed as one of those dogs on TOTP? I know he was on one of the other kids TV shows being interviewed in the costume, either Saturday Superstore or Swap Shop, as a clip was shown on TV recently.

Andrew, would I be right in thinking you have a copy of this edition on video?
I don't suppose you can do copies, can you?

Yeah, apparently Simon was inside the Wonder Dog costume.
I only remember watching Natasha and Gillan from this edition at the time.
